Derwent Valley Mills
The Derwent Valley in central England features a series of 18th and 19th century cotton mills and an industrial landscape of high historical and technological interest. The modern mill originated at Cromford Mill, where Richard Arkwright’s invention was first put into industrial production. The workers’ housing associated with this and other mills remains intact, reflecting the socio-economic development of the area.
The Causses and the Cévennes, Mediterranean agro-pastoral Cultural Landscape
Located in the south of central France, this 302,319-hectare land is a mountainous landscape interspersed with deep valleys that represent the relationship between agro-pastoral systems and their biophysical environment, especially accessed by paths or less travelled roads. The villages of the Causses and the solid stone farmhouses on deep terraces reflect the organization of a large monastery from the 11th century. The Lozère Mountains within the land are one of the last places where summer migratory grazing is still carried out in the traditional way (using paths).
Chaîne des Puys - Limagne fault tectonic arena
Located in central France, the site includes the long Limagne Fault, the Chaîne des Puys volcanic complex and the inverted relief of the Montagne de la Serre. It is an iconic part of the Western European Rift, which was formed 35 million years ago after the formation of the Alps. The geological features of the site show how the continental crust can crack and then collapse, causing deep magma to rise and cause surface uplift. The site is an exceptional example of continental breakup (or rifting), one of the five main stages of plate tectonics.
Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park
The park, formerly known as Uluru (Ayers Rock - Mount Olgas) National Park, features spectacular geological formations that dominate the vast red sandy plains of central Australia. Uluru is a huge monolith and Kata Tjuta is a rock dome located west of Uluru that formed part of the traditional belief system of one of the oldest human societies in the world. The traditional owners of Uluru-Kata Tjuta are the Anangu Aboriginal people.
Historic Centre of the Town of Goiás
Goiás bears witness to the occupation and colonization of the lands of central Brazil in the 18th and 19th centuries. The urban layout is a model of the organic development of a mining town, adapted to local conditions. Despite its modest size, the public and private buildings form a harmonious whole thanks to the consistent use of local materials and indigenous techniques.
