iSimangaliso Wetland Park

Sustained fluvial, marine, and aeolian processes in the region have created a variety of landforms, including coral reefs, long sandy beaches, coastal dunes, lake systems, swamps, and extensive reed and papyrus wetlands. The park's environmental heterogeneity, with its interaction with major floods and coastal storms, and its transitional geographical location between subtropical and tropical Africa, has resulted in an exceptional diversity of species and ongoing speciation. The mix of landforms and habitat types creates a stunning landscape. The site contains important habitats for a range of species from African marine, wetland, and savannah environments.

Darien National Park

Darien National Park is a bridge between the two continents of the New World, with a wide variety of habitats - sandy beaches, rocky coasts, mangroves, swamps, and lowland and highland tropical forests that are home to a wealth of wildlife. Two Indian tribes live in the park.

Cerrado Protected Areas: Chapada dos Veadeiros and Emas National Parks

The two designated sites contain flora and fauna and key habitats unique to the Cerrado, one of the oldest and most diverse tropical ecosystems in the world. For thousands of years, these sites have provided refuges for a wide range of species during periods of climate change and are critical to maintaining the biodiversity of the Cerrado during future climate fluctuations.

Archipiélago de Revillagigedo

Located in the eastern Pacific Ocean, this archipelago consists of four remote islands and their surrounding waters: San Benedicto, Socorro, Roca Partida and Clarion. The archipelago is part of an underwater mountain range, with the four islands representing volcanic peaks above sea level. The islands provide important habitat for a variety of wildlife, especially seabirds. The surrounding waters are home to large pelagic species such as manta rays, whales, dolphins and sharks.

Lake Malawi National Park

Located at the southern end of the vast Lake Malawi, the national park is a deep, clear lake backed by mountains and home to hundreds of fish species, almost all of which are endemic. Its importance to evolutionary studies is comparable to that of the finches of the Galapagos Islands.

Sian Ka'an

In the language of the Maya people who once inhabited the area, Sian Ka'an means "origin of the sky". Located on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, this biosphere reserve contains tropical forests, mangroves and swamps, as well as vast marine areas divided by a large barrier reef. It provides habitat for an extremely rich flora and fauna, including more than 300 bird species, and a large number of terrestrial vertebrates endemic to the region, all living together in a diverse environment formed by its complex hydrological system.

Everglades National Park

This site at the southern tip of Florida has been described as "a river of grass that flows imperceptibly from inland to the sea." Its diverse aquatic habitats make it a refuge for a large number of birds and reptiles, as well as endangered species such as the manatee.

Area de Conservación Guanacaste

The Guanacaste Reserve (listed in 1999) has been expanded to include the 15,000-hectare private property Santa Elena. The area contains important natural habitats essential for the conservation of biodiversity, including the best dry forest habitat from Central America to northern Mexico and critical habitats for endangered or rare plant and animal species. The site demonstrates important ecological processes in both terrestrial and marine coastal environments.
