Jingniang Lake

Jingniang Lake is located in the northwest of Wu'an City, about 60 kilometers away from Handan. It is named after the story of Emperor Taizu of Song Dynasty, Zhao Kuangyin, sending Jingniang away for thousands of miles. Jingniang Lake was originally called Kou Shang Reservoir, which was built from 1966 to 1969. It has a maximum water surface of 2,500 mu, a total water storage capacity of 32.08 million cubic meters, and an altitude of 1,088 meters. The lake is in the shape of an inverted "human" and the water tour area is divided into two tributaries, the east and the west. The east branch is the front section of Changshechuan, and the west branch is the front section of Mendaochuan, each of which is 3 kilometers long. Here, there are mountains and peaks, rippling lakes, lush forests, and historical sites and myths and legends, forming a poetic and picturesque Jingniang Lake tourist area. The 21st volume of Feng Menglong's "Stories to Warn the World" tells the story of "Zhao Taizu sent Jingniang thousands of miles away". The gist is as follows: The commoner Zhao Jingniang followed her father to Beiyue to fulfill her hometown vows. Unexpectedly, she encountered bandits on the road and was detained in the Taoist temple where Zhao Kuangyin's uncle Zhao Jingqing was. Zhao Kuangyin heard the voice while strolling in the Taoist temple and rescued Jingniang. Fearing that she would be in trouble again, he escorted her home. In order to facilitate the journey, the two became brother and sister. Along the way, Jingniang admired Zhao Kuangyin's righteousness and helped others, and expressed her love for him. However, Zhao did not respond and adhered to the etiquette of brother and sister. After returning home, Jingniang's father wanted to betroth Jingniang to Zhao Kuangyin, but Zhao Kuangyin refused to leave because he did not want to be labeled as unjust. Under the cold words of her family, Jingniang hanged herself to show her chastity. When Zhao Kuangyin ascended the throne, he was very sighed after learning about this incident and specially conferred a title and built a temple for her.
