China Danxia

Chinese Danxia is the Chinese name for the continental red terrigenous sedimentary landscapes that have been shaped by internal forces, including uplift, and external forces, including weathering and erosion. Listed Danxia landforms include six areas in subtropical southwestern China. These areas feature spectacular red cliffs and a range of erosional landforms, including dramatic natural columns, towers, gullies, valleys and waterfalls. These rugged landscapes help preserve subtropical broadleaf evergreen forests and are home to many plant and animal species, about 400 of which are considered rare or endangered.

Ennedi Massif: Natural and Cultural Landscape

In the northeast of the country, the sandstone Ennedi Massif has been eroded over time by water and wind, creating a plateau with canyons and valleys, presenting a spectacular landscape characterized by cliffs, natural arches and pitons. The permanent presence of water in the largest canyons plays a vital role in the ecosystem of the massif, sustaining plant, animal and human life. Thousands of drawings and carvings are painted on the rock surfaces of caves, canyons and shelters, presenting one of the largest rock art complexes in the Sahara.

Lut Desert

The Lut Desert is located in the south-east of the country. Every year from June to October, this arid subtropical region is buffeted by strong winds that move sediments and cause large-scale wind erosion. As a result, the site presents some of the most spectacular aeolian yardangs (huge rippled ridges). It also contains large areas of stony desert and dune fields. The property is an exceptional example of ongoing geological processes.

Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia

The Goreme Valley and its surroundings are a scenic area entirely carved by erosion and feature rock-hewn sanctuaries that provide unique evidence of post-Iconoclastic Byzantine art. Dwellings, troglodyte villages and underground towns can also be seen here, which are the remains of traditional human settlements dating back to the 4th century.

Schokland and Surroundings

The Schokland peninsula became an island in the 15th century. Due to sea erosion, Schokland was occupied and then abandoned, and in 1859 people had to evacuate the island. But as the Zuiderzee dried up, Schokland has been part of land reclamation since the 1940s. Schokland retains traces of human habitation from prehistoric times. It symbolizes the Dutch people's heroic and long struggle against sea erosion.

Simien National Park

Over the years, the Ethiopian highlands have undergone massive erosion, creating one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world, with jagged peaks, deep valleys and cliffs rising to 1,500 metres. The park is home to some of the most rare animals, such as gelada baboons, Simien foxes and the Walia ibex (a type of goat found nowhere else in the world).

Xingtai Grand Canyon Scenic Area

Xingtai Grand Canyon, also known as the Canyon Group and Taihang Gorge Group, has always been called the "World Gorge" by geologists. There are hundreds of main landscapes: Changzui Gorge, Liushui Gorge, Huangchao Gorge, Wangmao Peak, Longtan Waterfall, Guanzhen Pavilion, Ape Man Head, etc., like bright pearls, inlaid in the mountains. The formation of the Grand Canyon is related to the Yanshan Movement. A billion years ago, it was still a vast ocean. When the crust rose and broke, the sea water also fluctuated and continuously washed the mountain. Later, it gradually formed today's unique canyon landform. The vicissitudes of time are in full view, and people can't help but sigh that nature is the god who dominates everything. The scenic area contains precious geological resources: turtle back stone, wave mark stone, thousand-layer rock, the stock is extremely rare, and it has formed a unique landform landscape. The landscapes such as Liushui Gorge and Shenying Gorge are formed on the basis of special quartz sandstone rock structure, and after continuous erosion by running water and wind and rain, they finally form a strange natural stone landscape.
