Yanglingou taro is a specialty of Yanglingou Town, Hanchuan City, Xiaogan City, Hubei Province, and a national agricultural product geographical indication. Hanchuan City is an alluvial plain of the Han River. The cultivated land is mainly sandy loam or loam, with a flat terrain and an average altitude of 30 meters. The Yanglingou taro planting area belongs to the subtropical continental monsoon climate, with an average annual daily temperature of 16.4, a frost-free period of 272 days, and an annual precipitation of 1239 mm, which is suitable for taro growth. The leaves of Yanglingou taro are dark green, the stems are purple-brown, the bulbs are oval, and the plant height is 50-90 cm. The taro skin is brown-brown and the cross-section is milky white. The mother taro is large and spherical, weighing 300-500 grams each; the child taro is oval, weighing 30-60 grams each; the flesh is tight, and the taste is soft and sweet after steaming, with a strong fragrance and a long aftertaste. The stewed soup is pink and tender, the soup is white, and the juice is thick. Hydrological conditions The river in the Yanglingou taro area belongs to the Hanjiang River, a tributary of the Yangtze River. The irrigation water for planting mainly comes from the water diversion of the Hanjiang River and natural rainfall. The Yanglingou taro planting area is backed by the Han River, with a high groundwater level and abundant irrigation water resources. The ditches are spread throughout the villages and groups, making drainage and irrigation convenient. The water quality of the Han River is clean and pollution-free, which is suitable for the production of Yanglingou taro. Climate conditions The Yanglingou taro planting area belongs to the subtropical continental monsoon climate, with an average annual daily temperature of 16.4, a frost-free period of 272 days, an annual precipitation of 1239 mm, and the highest rainfall concentrated in March-September, accounting for 67.5% of the annual rainfall, an average annual relative humidity of 76%, and an average annual sunshine of 1609 hours. The four seasons are distinct throughout the year, with short winters and long summers, and sufficient temperature, light, and rainfall, which are suitable for the growth and development of Yanglingou taro, and are conducive to the accumulation of photosynthetic products and the improvement of quality of Yanglingou taro. On July 3, 2018, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People's Republic of China officially approved the registration and protection of agricultural product geographical indications for "Yanglingou taro".
