Fishermen's competition is a type of game for islanders, which originated from the labor of fishermen. In their long-term production and life, Zhoushan fishermen have formed a large number of traditional competitive activities with island interest and marine characteristics. Climbing masts, pulling sails, rowing, throwing cables, climbing cables, anchoring, moving wine jars, swimming, diving, diving, sliding mud horses, beach tug-of-war, beach wrestling, weaving nets and other important labor survival skills have become organized and large-scale competitive activities. They have been passed down from generation to generation in island fishing villages for thousands of years and have become special sports competitions. In the old days, fishermen's competitive activities were generally carried out during the leisure period of fishing operations or when fishing boats entered the port for leisure. Later, they developed to the point where these entertaining competitive games became the main content of major sea sacrifices, celebrations or temple fairs such as the opening and closing of the ocean. These games focus on the competition of physical strength and skills, which trains the strong physique that fishermen must have to fight against wind and waves at sea for a long time, and cultivates the extraordinary courage and strong will of island fishermen. After being inherited and developed by generations of fishermen, they have become an important part of the spiritual life of Zhoushan fishermen. After the reform and opening up, in order to inherit and promote folk culture, Putuo District has listed traditional fishing competitions as an important event in the China Shenjiamen Fishing Port International Folk Culture Conference held annually.
