🎧  Listen to Introduction

During the Dragon Boat Festival, every household in Wuchang hangs hundreds of herbs, eats "five yellows", and spontaneously organizes dragon boat races. The characteristics of Wuchang Dragon Boat Race are to compete in skills and make a fuss about dragon boats, with the emphasis on "rowing", and not deliberately emphasizing winning by speed. Wuchang dragon boats can be divided into several types according to decoration, including full-sky banners, half-sky banners and bare-chested dragon boats. Full-sky banners and half-sky banners are ornamental dragon boats. Bare-chested dragon boats are the most common, and they are not decorated. They only have a dragon head erected on the bow, fixed with mud below. From 12 noon to 3 pm on the Dragon Boat Festival, hundreds of dragon boats of various colors from all over the country gather at Wuchang Bangkou. On a river section of four or five hundred meters, gongs and drums are exciting, waves are splashing, and boats row back and forth, squeezing and shoving each other, bustling and exciting. At the same time, the shore was crowded with people, shouting and cheering, echoing the horns on the water, and the scene was very spectacular. Before and after the Dragon Boat Festival, Wuchang also had traditional folk activities such as "inviting the Dragon King", "thanking the Dragon King", and "drinking dragon boat wine". After rowing the dragon boat to "thank the Dragon King" on the Dragon Boat Festival, the young and old in each village gathered together to drink dragon boat wine and reward the rowers, which was very lively. Wuchang Dragon Boat Festival is a unique folk festival in the Jiangnan water town, with extensive mass and folk inheritance, reflecting a strong cultural cohesion. With the evolution of the times, the local social life in Wuchang has changed a lot. The villagers are scattered in various farmhouses and it is difficult to gather together. Under this situation, various folk rituals, including the Dragon Boat Festival, have become increasingly simplified and are constantly losing their original characteristics. It is urgent to strengthen protection measures to prevent the ancient festival customs from being gradually lost.
