The ancient town of Chaiqiao was formed as a street market as early as the Ming and Qing Dynasties. There are big markets on the first and sixth day of the lunar calendar and small markets on the third and eighth day of the lunar calendar. The old street is 1,335 meters long and 7-8 meters wide. There are more than 50 century-old shops and time-honored brands. Among them, the "Yangzhengtang Eye Pharmacy" is well-known. Since Chaiqiao was a major commercial town in the Jiangnan area of the former Zhenhai, merchants used wooden beam scales for transactions before the founding of the People's Republic of China, which gave rise to the century-old scale shop "Dong Fuxing Scale Shop". Wooden beam scales are divided into three types: large, medium and small according to the length of the scale bar and the size of the weight. The "copper basin scale" is called the "copper basin scale" instead of the scale hook. The large beam scale can generally weigh 300 catties, while the smallest scale bar, such as ivory chopsticks, can only weigh 1-2 catties and is mostly used in Chinese medicine pharmacies to prepare Chinese medicine. Before electronic scales were available, wooden beam scales were essential daily necessities for farmers. Because the wooden beam scale has a wide range of applications and its shape resembles a dragon, some families regard it as a lucky object and use it to ward off evil spirits and worship it in the main hall. When educating children, people often use the catchphrase "If you don't know how to use a scale, you can't be the head of the family."
