Legend of Confucius' Return to Che Temple
Confucius' return car, a folk legend of historical stories. It is said that Confucius traveled around the countries, preached and taught. After the lobbying in Zheng State, he drove straight to Jin State. When he and his disciples came to a mountain village under Tianjing Pass on the border of Jin State (now in Jinmiaopu Town, Zezhou County, Shanxi Province), they saw some children playing with stone city and refused to give way. One of them was a naughty boy named Xiang Tuo, who questioned Confucius with the saying "only the car goes around the city, but there is no city to give way to the car". Confucius saw that Xiang Tuo was small but had outstanding qualities, so he bowed to him as a teacher and asked his disciples to go around the "city". When they arrived at Tianjing Pass, they met a squirrel holding a walnut in its mouth and ran to the front to salute and sing. Confucius was very moved to see that the children in Jin State were so smart that even animals understood etiquette, so he turned the car back to the south. The return car tracks of that year are still preserved in Tianjing Pass Village. To worship Confucius, later generations built a Confucian Temple in the southeast of the village (according to historical records, the temple was built by Confucius' 19th-generation grandson Kong Yu when he was an official in Luoyang during the Eastern Han Dynasty). They also erected a stone tablet and a pavilion of "Confucius's Chariot Track", and changed Xingyanyi to Lanche Village. Since then, Confucius' Chariot Track has become one of the four famous landscapes in Jincheng. Confucius' Chariot Track Temple is located at the west end of Confucian Temple Street, Dongzhang Village, Yanminghu Township, Zhongmu County. It is a place to worship and commemorate Confucius, a thinker and great educator in my country. In the Spring and Autumn Period, Confucius, the founder of Confucianism, led his students to travel around the countries and spread scriptures in order to let the rulers of various countries implement his benevolent government ideas and realize his political ambitions. One day, several of their teachers and apprentices came to Nanyanjie Village, Beilichu, Zhongmu County. In the middle of the street, there was a seven or eight-year-old child wearing a red bellyband and a red headband on his head, who was enthusiastically building a circle of earth. Zilu hurriedly stepped forward and said, "Little boy, make way." The child stood up, pointed at Zilu arrogantly and said, "Can't you see that this is a city? Only cars go around the city. How can the city make way for cars?" Zilu was speechless. When Confucius heard the child's extraordinary words, he quickly got off the car and saluted, saying, "I am Confucius. I am traveling west to preach. May I ask your name and if I can lend you my way to the west?" The child said, "I am Xiang Tuo. Are you the knowledgeable Confucius?" Confucius replied, "Yes, I am Confucius." Xiang Tuo said, "I will ask you three questions. If you can answer them, you can go west. If you can't, I will have to ask you to return." Confucius said, "Please ask." Xiang Tuo said, "Why are pine and cypress evergreen all year round?" Confucius replied, "Because the wood is solid." The child said, "How can bamboo be evergreen all year round when its core is hollow?" Confucius was speechless. The child asked again: "How many eyelashes do you have?" Confucius said: "I can't see." The child pulled his hair with his hand and said: "How many can you see?" Confucius still couldn't answer. The child asked again: "Why do geese call so loudly?" Confucius said: "The neck is long." Xiang Tuo said: "Why does the geese call so loudly with a short neck?" Confucius couldn't answer again. Finally, Confucius said: "Xiang Tuo is my teacher and a child prodigy." Then he said goodbye and returned to the original road. In order to commemorate Confucius' humility and love of learning, later generations built the Confucius Temple on Nanyan Street. The bluestone in the temple is engraved with "Confucius's place to return the car". After several renovations in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, in the 13th year of the Republic of China (1912), the county magistrate Song Yulin donated money and ordered the gentry to raise a thousand coins for renovation. Its scale is still larger than that of ordinary temples. After the founding of New China, the Confucius Temple was changed to Dongzhang Primary School, and then to Dongzhang Middle School. By 1913, the Confucius Temple was completely demolished and converted into a teaching building. On the wall of the kitchen, there is a stone tablet with the words "Confucius's return place" engraved on it. The tablet is more than two feet wide and four feet high. At that time, it was piled on the wall, and the words were blurred due to smoke and fire. Now Zhongmu County Cultural Center preserves a rebuilt "Confucius's return place" stone tablet, which was rebuilt by Wei Shijian in the first year of Qianlong (year). The words are blurred and difficult to recognize. From the stone tablet and the county annals, it is enough to prove that the Confucian Temple in Dongzhang Village, Zhongmu County is the return place of Confucius, without a doubt.
