Chen Zhengbiao woodcarving is a traditional art project in the fourth batch of representative projects of the city-level intangible cultural heritage of Yancheng. Chen Zhengbiao woodcarving is a comprehensive carrier of Chaozhou woodcarving and Su-style woodcarving techniques. It has a history of about 140 years. In the long-term evolution and exploration, Chen Zhengbiao's own artistic techniques have been formed. In 1934, Mr. Chen Guangzhi, the 19th generation of the Chen family, moved to Huaiyin and settled in the current Binhai County of Yancheng City. According to the local warm temperate to subtropical wet monsoon climate zone, the winter is cold and the summer is hot, the four seasons are distinct, the sunlight is sufficient, the climate is mild, the frost-free period is long, the precipitation is abundant, and the rain and heat are in the same season. The natural conditions and local ethnic customs are taken locally: paper mulberry (also known as paper mulberry, Binhai dialect: dog bone tree), locust tree and other materials, according to the characteristics of fast growth, strong adaptability, wide distribution, easy reproduction, high heat, and short rotation period. Begin to carve wood beds, barrels, bowls, wooden tables and chairs and other daily necessities. In the long-term production and life practice, Chen Zhengbiao's wood carvings can be divided into four categories: relief, round, root and hollow. Relief is a pattern carved on the surface of wooden products, generally composed of dragon and phoenix patterns, auspicious patterns, cloud hooks, and wavy patterns. Most round carvings are simulations of real people and animals, also known as three-dimensional carvings, and viewers can see all sides of the object from different angles. Free-form carving takes self-generated and distorted forms as artistic creation objects, and creates artistic images of people, animals, utensils, etc. through conception, artistic processing and craftsmanship. Hollowing is an art of carving, mainly used for eight-immortal tables, window lattices, etc. The overall formation of Chen Zhengbiao's wood carvings is clearly recorded in the "Chen Family Genealogy".
