🎧  Listen to Introduction

Xinghua traditional wooden boat manufacturing skills are traditional handicrafts of the Han nationality that are spread in Zhuhong Town, Xinghua City, Jiangsu Province. Zhuhong Town had a workshop for making wooden fishing boats in the Song Dynasty. In the Ming Dynasty, the craft was mainly used to make agricultural boats and inland fishing boats. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, Zhuhong wooden boat manufacturing had become popular. The town was mainly composed of Zhou, Zheng, Chen, Wang, Feng, Cui, Li and other surnames, engaged in pure manual production of agricultural, fishing and commercial wooden boats, and it has continued to this day. In 2008, the traditional wooden boat manufacturing skills declared by Xinghua City, Jiangsu Province were selected into the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage list in my country. Xinghua traditional wooden boat manufacturing skills are quite complicated, with many processes and difficult craftsmanship. There are more than ten processes from material selection and preparation to cutting, mixing, breaking, dividing boards, splicing boards, throwing boats, and beating sesame oil, all of which are manual operations. The process is complicated. There are no drawings during the production process, and it all depends on the vision and experience of the shipbuilder. 1. Material selection and preparation. To make a wooden boat, you should choose natural old fir wood. This wood is strong and tough. The boat made of it has a shallow draft, great buoyancy, can carry heavy loads, is light and sensitive, and is relatively strong and durable. 2. Cutting and proportioning. The size of the cutting and proportioning depends on the structure of the hull. The hull is generally composed of the bottom, the side and the beam, which are composed of the bow, the middle cabin and the stern. The size of the boat varies, so the size of the cutting is more particular. 3. Breaking the board. After the log is cut, the first step is to break the board. In the past, there was no electric saw, and it was all done by hand. First, use the ink fountain and the tooth to mark and spring the line according to the actual thickness required, and then set up the saw to break the board. 4. Divide the board. After breaking the board, the saw surface must be planed with a coarse and fine plane, and then the finished board is made according to the actual length, width, thickness and angle required. 5. Splice the board. When splicing the board, the nail holes must be placed first. In the past, there were no electric drills, and drilling was done entirely by manpower. After the plates with holes were assembled with nails (iron nails with large heads and small tails) to form the ship's side, bottom and bulkheads, they could be put on board. 6. Putting on board (assembly). The procedure for putting on board is generally to connect the middle cabin bottom plate with the front and rear bulkheads first. Then use hemp ropes, hoops, clamps, pan heads, tendons, pointed brakes and other tools to tighten the bow and stern, connect them to the front and rear and wave boards, use "climbing head nails" and "flat head nails" to bite the wood in the middle, and use various rivets to reinforce the joints to make them unbreakable. 7. Beating hemp and filling with ash. The process of beating hemp and filling with ash is divided into five steps: the first step is rolling ash; the second step is filling ash; the third step is twisting ash, the fourth step is beating hemp; and the last step is sealing. 8. Oil tanker. Oiling a boat is the main method to prevent corrosion of the boat plate and ensure the durability of the hull. There are three processes: first, applying base oil; second, applying top oil; and third, applying sun oil. 9. Launching. After a period of time, when the tung oil of a new boat is completely dry, it can be launched. The launching of a new boat is no less than "raising the beam" of a house. The boatman's neck is also covered with red and green and golden flowers. The wave board also needs to be engraved with blessing characters and longan, and incense, paper candles, incense, firecrackers, and worship of the Buddha. Xinghua traditional wooden boats are widely used in agricultural production, fishery production, transportation, and urban scenic spot sightseeing and tourism. They are sold to more than ten provinces and cities across the country, and hundreds of them are exported to Western European countries such as Japan, the Netherlands, and Germany.
