Beijiao Village Lantern Festival is a level-one intangible cultural heritage protection unit in Fangshan District, Beijing. Beijiao Village is located in the southern part of Fozizhuang Township. The village has five folk festivals, including the Lions Club, the Chaozi Club, the Drum Club, the Concert, and the Lantern Festival, which have been passed down to this day. The Lantern Festival in Beijiao Village is ancient, and began in the late Ming Dynasty, with a history of more than 400 years. According to the old people in the village, the founder of the Lantern Festival was a wandering Taoist from the south. Every year on the first, second, third, and fifteenth day of the first lunar month, the festival is held on traditional festivals, also known as Panjie. The Lantern Festival is different from the Lions Club, Chaozi Club, Drum Club, and Concert in the village. Each Lantern Festival requires about 20 people, and all of them participate in the construction of the city, including drawing points, digging pits, and bundling sorghum stalks. After the city is built, the specific division of labor includes patrolling the edge of the city, refueling in the city, entrance control, and exit control. The locals call it the Lantern Market, also known as the "City". The "City" covers an area of about two or three acres. Every year, the "City" is set up on a dark coal yard in the east of the village. It takes 365 sorghum stalks to build the "city", symbolizing the 365 days of the year. The archway is decorated with cypress branches, symbolizing the evergreen season, and there are couplets hanging on it. There are revolving lanterns and flower lanterns on both sides of the archway, which set off the festive and peaceful New Year. Before each Lantern Festival, the old association (village committee) will send out invitations. It is held on the 14th, 15th and 16th of the first lunar month every year. Preparations and construction of the "city" are made one week in advance. The specific matters are all handled by the "lantern festival". There is a trial meeting on the 14th of the first lunar month, a formal meeting on the 15th of the first lunar month, and a final meeting on the 16th of the first lunar month.
