Golden Pigeon on Buckwheat Mountain

🎧  Listen to Introduction

In Xiayunling Township, Fangshan District, there is a high mountain called Qiaomai Mountain. According to legend, there was no such mountain in ancient times. There was only a bare ridge here. One summer, when wheat and wheat were growing, there was an unprecedented drought. The scorching sun scorched the earth, and in just a few days, all the seedlings died of drought. At this time, even if there were grain seeds, the farming season had long passed, not to mention that people had no grain seeds at all? If there was no harvest this year, how could they live next year? People were worried. Flee to other places, but there were many refugees coming here every day. According to these people, they fled from hundreds or even thousands of miles away, where droughts, floods, insect plagues, and plagues continued, causing many villages and towns to become wilderness, and corpses could be seen everywhere. At this point, the people here went from sorrow to complete despair. Wait for death. Everyone thought so. But the desire to survive prompted them not to sit and wait for death. Death, after all, is painful, and people are extremely reluctant. To survive, even one more day is good. To survive, the men got up very early every day, went to the shady slopes or ditches to look for some drought-resistant plants, and collected all edible fruits, roots, stems, and leaves to take home. The old people and women cooked these things carefully, added a little grain, and survived. As the saying goes, "Man is iron, and rice is steel." How can people survive by eating only these things? Not long after, people's bodies became swollen. The men no longer had the strength to travel far, and the things they collected and brought home became less and less. Under such circumstances, many people died one after another. It was almost autumn, but where was the harvest? People were completely desperate. In a dark night, there was a loud noise that shook the earth, waking the people here from their sleep. After the sound, the whole earth was brightly lit. With the light, people could clearly see that the ridges in the distance were green, and in the blink of an eye, they turned golden. There were also many black hills. After the light, it was dark again. This continued for several nights. People were afraid at first, then surprised, and then wanted to know why. One morning, several young men came to the mountain ridge. They were stunned when they saw it. It turned out that the bare mountain ridge was full of a plant that they could not name, and it was full of dark brown tetrahedral fruits. When they broke it open with their hands, the inside was white. When they chewed it in their mouths, a fragrance of grain immediately wafted out. They were very happy. Looking at the side, there were many piles of such fruits. "This is the small hill we saw at night!" "Oh my God, we are saved now!" Several people shouted excitedly. After a while, they ran back to the village and called on the villagers to come here to harvest the grain. People nearby heard the news and came here, scrambling to harvest these grain crops. It was strange that these piles of fruits and a small piece of plant actually filled the grain storage of the nearby people. But what is the name of this grain? No one can tell clearly. Just as everyone was discussing, a voice suddenly rang out in the air: Buckwheat lives in heaven and came down to earth to save the people. Plant in late summer and harvest in autumn, eat it to strengthen your body and taste sweet. The voice was so clear that everyone understood it. It turned out that this grain was called buckwheat. People were so excited that they knelt down together to thank the heaven. The next year, after planting buckwheat, they had an unprecedented bumper harvest. Everyone did not forget the life-saving grace of this mountain, and each of them carried buckwheat here to fulfill their vows. After kneeling for a long time to thank the grace, they stood up and were shocked. The pile of buckwheat they had fallen had condensed tightly together to form a high mountain. The shape of the mountain was like a huge buckwheat grain, so this mountain was called Buckwheat Mountain. From then on, every morning when the sun shone on the mountain, it emitted a dazzling golden light. In the dead of night, there was often a golden light flashing there. Soon someone discovered the secret. It turned out that a pair of golden pigeons lived on Buckwheat Mountain. Based on this, people speculated that the buckwheat might be brought to everyone by the pair of golden pigeons. From then on, the people here regarded the Buckwheat Mountain as a god, worshipped it from afar every day, and no one dared to set foot on the mountain easily. But not long after, two greedy ghosts, Zhang Tujin and Li Weiyin, came to the mountain to look for treasure. When they learned that there were two golden pigeons on the mountain, they were immediately ecstatic. Regardless of the fatigue of the journey, they ran madly to the Buckwheat Mountain. As soon as they climbed halfway up the mountain, they found several golden eggs, and the two of them fought desperately. After fighting for a while, Zhang Tujin suddenly found that there was a flash of golden light in the cave not far away, so he climbed to the shining place desperately. When he looked inside the cave, he saw a pair of golden pigeons sleeping together. Because the cave entrance was too small, people could not get in and could not catch them, so the two agreed that one would guard the cave entrance and the other would go down the mountain to find stone chiseling tools. After Zhang Tujin left, Li Weiyin waited for a long time before he saw a golden pigeon walk to the entrance of the cave, lying on the ground and calling "coo". Li Weiyin thought, if I catch it, why worry about not having gold and silver in this life? So he pounced on it. Unexpectedly, the golden pigeon was startled and flew away. Li Weiyin stepped into the air and rolled down the mountain, hitting Zhang Tujin who was coming back with tools. The two fell off the cliff and died together. The other golden pigeon in the cave also took the opportunity to fly away. The people here hate these two greedy ghosts. Whenever they mention this, they will say angrily: "If it weren't for these two greedy ghosts, the golden pigeon would definitely live with us forever." Many years later, whenever buckwheat is mentioned, people here will think of Buckwheat Mountain and the golden pigeons on Buckwheat Mountain.
