The craft of making colorful rice dumplings during the Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional craft item in the fourth batch of representative items of municipal intangible cultural heritage. Colorful rice dumplings are traditional handicrafts that originated from "wrapping paintings". Some say that the origin of colorful rice dumplings was to protect the rice dumplings thrown into the Miluo River from being eaten by dragons, while others say that it was a skill that was passed on to the people by palace maids who accompanied Emperor Qianlong when he went to the south of the Yangtze River. Until now, many places still retain the custom of making and wearing colorful rice dumplings during the Dragon Boat Festival. The small and exquisite colorful rice dumplings have long become auspicious objects that can drive away evil spirits, avoid disasters, and pray for blessings in the eyes of many people. Because colorful rice dumplings have profound meanings and strong ornamental value, Nanjing has gradually formed the custom of sending colorful rice dumplings during the Dragon Boat Festival. In the past, when the old Nanjing people arrived at the Dragon Boat Festival, they would hang colorful rice dumplings in every household and send them to each other. They would put grains in the colorful rice dumplings to symbolize a good harvest of grains. The craftsmanship of making colored zongzi for the Dragon Boat Festival in Nanjing has been passed down by several generations, including Han Yuru. Drawing on traditional Chinese painting and fine brushwork, and combining the essence of the techniques of colored zongzi for the Dragon Boat Festival in the north and south, it has now formed a unique artistic style, creating colored zongzi works with Jinling charm and humanistic atmosphere.
