🎧  Listen to Introduction

Feather painting is made by hand-pasting the finest bird feathers on a specific surface (such as paper) with synthetic glue. In the early Tang Dynasty, folk artists in He County inserted feathers of different colors into clay sculptures when preparing sacrificial offerings for the "March 3" temple fair at the Overlord Temple. Later, scholars in the Qing Dynasty tried three times to paste feathers on different cloth and paper surfaces, creating feather painting for the first time. Feather painting is sterilized under high pressure and has strong corrosion resistance. The picture is exquisite and elegant, with both three-dimensional sense and the texture of traditional Chinese painting. Birds, beasts, landscapes and figures can all be included in the painting. Representative works include "Running", "Spreading Wings", "Announcement", "Horses", "Double Eagles", "Ink Bamboo", etc., with more than 100 varieties. Its unique style has been praised by many famous artists. Lin Sanzhi once gave a gift: "The feather paintings made by Chuqi are exquisite and impressive. There is talent everywhere, as can be seen from this." The inheritance pedigree of feather painting has been counted for nine generations since the mid-Qing Dynasty, and its production technology has been continuously improved. The works have been circulated within and outside the province since the late Qing Dynasty, and have been given as gifts to countries such as Japan, Romania, Bulgaria, Finland, etc., and their influence has continued to expand.
