Wuhu has a developed iron smelting industry since ancient times, and has the reputation of "iron in Wuhu becomes steel". The Wuhu iron painting forging technique was developed on this basis. Wuhu iron painting uses hammers as pens and forged iron as paintings. It is a masterpiece of superb craftsmanship, natural charm and superb skills. Iron painting began in the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, and was created by Wuhu ironworker Tang Peng and Wuhu painter Xiao Yuncong. It has a history of more than 340 years. According to the "Iron Painting Song Preface" recorded in the "Wuhu County Chronicles" of the Qing Dynasty, "Tang Tianchi is a neighbor of the painter. He watched his ink splashing every day, and the painter scolded him. Peng was angry and forged iron into mountains and rivers, cold shores and lonely islands, which were full of life." Wuhu iron painting originated from traditional Chinese painting. It has the artistic characteristics of the Xin'an School of Painting, which is thin, vigorous and concise, and has a cold and stubborn style. It is completed purely by hand forging. It uses wrought iron as raw material, and after being heated in a red furnace, it is made by forging, drilling, lifting, pressing, welding, filing, chiseling and other techniques. Wuhu iron painting has both the charm of traditional Chinese painting and the three-dimensional beauty of sculpture, and also shows the flexibility and ductility of steel. It is a unique style of art. Wuhu iron painting has participated in the Paris World Expo in France and the Budapest Plastic Arts Exhibition in Hungary, and has been exhibited in more than 20 countries and regions including Japan, Kuwait, Italy, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and Hong Kong. From 1959 to 1960, the old artist Chu Yanqing and several disciples made large iron paintings "Welcoming Pine", "Meishan Reservoir" and iron calligraphy "Qinyuanchun Snow", which were displayed in the Great Hall of the People. After more than 300 years of inheritance and development, Wuhu iron painting has not only produced traditional small scenes, painted lanterns, and screens, but also created new varieties such as three-dimensional iron paintings, bonsai iron paintings, porcelain plate iron paintings, and gilded iron paintings, forming five major series of more than 200 varieties of screens, murals, calligraphy, decorative furnishings, and gifts, and is unique in the art world with its unique style and charm.
