🎧  Listen to Introduction

Songming Lanterns is one of the main places where Yunnan Lanterns are spread. Songming's traditional lantern activities are very prosperous. According to historical records, there have been lantern activities in more than 200 villages. In addition to the performances during the Lantern Festival, Songming Lanterns also gather and perform in various folk temple fairs, and the lantern season lasts for one or two months. The performance forms of Songming Lanterns are diverse, and the folk custom is divided into two parts: "Tuanchang" and "Zuochang". "Tuanchang" is the opening program of the lantern performance, which is performed by more than ten pairs of male and female roles, and the atmosphere is warm and fiery. "Zuochang" is a general term for various small plays, small songs and dances, and small singing, with small plays as the main performance. Songming Lanterns have a very rich repertoire of small plays, about 70 in total. Some of the "talking plays" with only narration but no singing are rarely seen in other lantern distribution areas. The "Tuanchang" of Songming Lanterns was adapted into "Red Lantern Dance" by the General Political Department Song and Dance Troupe in the 1950s. It was performed at the "World Youth Festival" and had a certain influence. Some of the dramas (festivals) of Songming Lantern Festival are widely spread throughout the province. "Picking Tea in Songming", "Wang's Water Carrying", "Double-Fold Tune", "Eagle Spreads Wings" and other dramas are commonly used by lantern performance groups across the province. After the 1950s, due to a long-term interruption of activities, the traditional Songming Lantern Festival once declined, but recovered after the 1980s. Due to the passing away of old folk artists who are familiar with the lantern tradition, some of the dramas, tunes and performance forms of the Songming Lantern Festival have gradually been lost, and the scale of lantern activities is far less than before.
