Winter fishing customs of the Manchu people in Ning'an Ningguta
Winter fishing is an important production activity for the Manchus in Ning'an Ningguta. Experienced fishermen (also known as "fish heads") will first select a fishing spot, then make two rows of ice holes on the ice surface to allow the large net to pass under the ice, then gradually surround the net, and finally pull the fishing net under the ice to the surface of the water at the exit. Before fishing in winter, a sacrificial ceremony must be held. By offering sacrifices to the net and waking up the net, people pray for the blessing of the gods, bless all living things to continue to reproduce, the people to live auspiciously and healthily, and the safe and smooth fishing of the nets, and a good harvest.
