Shanghai
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Traditional Chinese handmade silk carpets have a history of more than 2,000 years. As early as the Tang Dynasty, traditional Chinese handmade silk carpets had become tribute to the court. In the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, traditional handmade crafts with unique local styles were formed. Shanghai handmade silk carpets were founded in Shanghai Jing'an Temple. In 1911, Hengfeng Yong'an Carpet Factory was established in Shanghai Jing'an Temple. Since then, Shanghai handmade silk carpets have continued to have a history of more than 100 years. Shanghai's silk carpet making technique uses natural silk to be hand-woven. A silk carpet is completed through 12 processes including hand-design, hand-drafting, hand-dotting, hand-color calculation, hand-color matching, hand-dyeing, hand-stitching, hand-manufacturing, hand-flattening, hand-cutting, hand-repairing, and acceptance. Weaving is the most important process in the silk carpet process. It uses a unique method of hand-tying 8-shaped knots to achieve special effects such as color separation, overlay, rhyme, and jump colors. Take 120 knots as an example: one square foot of silk carpet requires 14,400 8-shaped knots to be hand-tied, so that the silk carpet has accurate shape, rich expression, concise and heavy colors, and natural color transitions, which can fully express the artistic characteristics of traditional silk carpets and have been widely appreciated and valued by the cultural and artistic circles.
