According to the Xiuyan County Chronicles, Northeastern drum was introduced to Xiuyan in the late Qing Dynasty. There were Northeastern drum artists in Xiuyan during the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty. The most famous drum artist at that time was Yang Fuxiang, and the repertoire was mostly based on traditional short pieces. "There are beautiful deer in front of the mountain and wolves behind the mountain. The wolf and the deer are sworn brothers on the hill. If the wolf is in trouble, the deer will come to rescue it. If the deer is in trouble, the wolf will hide." These simple words, accompanied by the sound of the three-stringed instrument, hum the unique singing style of Xiuyan Northeastern drum. At the peak of the prosperity of Xiuyan Northeastern drum, there were more than 300 artists. Today, Xiuyan Northeastern drum is on the verge of extinction. In 2007, Liu Lanfang, vice chairman of the Chinese Quyi Artists Association, accepted Northeastern drum artist Yu Xiaoxia as his apprentice in Xiuyan and cut the ribbon for the establishment of the Northeastern Drum Association in Xiuyan. Many artists who had given up this folk art saw hope and joined the association to start performing again. The association now has more than 100 members and has been listed as a Chinese intangible cultural heritage, bringing hope to saving the endangered Xiuyan Northeastern Drum. According to the "Xiuyan County Chronicles", the Northeastern Drum was introduced to Xiuyan in the late Qing Dynasty. During the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, there were Northeastern Drum artists active in Xiuyan. The most famous drum artist at the time was Yang Fuxiang, and the repertoire was mostly based on traditional short pieces. In the 1940s, the singing skills and performance forms of the Xiuyan Northeastern Drum changed significantly. Some famous artists began to teach their apprentices, and many new artists emerged. In the 1980s, the Northeastern Drum of Xiuyan was at its peak. There were many people who liked the Northeastern Drum at that time, and there were many teahouses in the town that provided venues for performances. "At that time, we were not idle 365 days a year, and the performance list was basically full." Yang Jingzhou introduced that there were more than 300 performers of the Northeastern Drum of Xiuyan at that time, and their traces were all over the whole Xiuyan. The content introduction is rich in content, and long and short books are available. According to relevant personnel from the Xiuyan Cultural Department, the Northeastern Drum of Xiuyan belongs to Fengdiao, and it inherits the essence of Fengdiao Drum in singing, and has developed and innovated according to the characteristics of the Xiuyan area. The old artist Sun Jingzhou introduced that the Northeastern Drum has a lot of content. The earliest ones were traditional short sections. After being sorted out by the old artists, medium and long books gradually began to appear. According to statistics from the Xiuyan Cultural Department, there were 110 traditional books in 1983, such as "Seven Heroes and Five Righteousness" and "The Great Eight Righteousness". At present, most of the books have been lost, and only more than 50 volumes remain. The current situation of Xiuyan Northeast Drum is not optimistic. "No one wants to learn it even if we ask for it. The main reason is that we earn too little in this industry." Sun Jingzhou said that artists of Xiuyan Northeast Drum must have a high level of education. Only in this way can they master the rhythm of the drum, and there are very few people who meet this requirement. This is also one of the reasons why there is no successor to the Northeast Drum. "No one listens to our singing. The main audience are people over 40 years old. There are too few young people who like this." At present, the cultural department of Xiuyan Manchu Autonomous County has begun a comprehensive survey of the origin and current situation of Xiuyan Northeast Drum. Collect information, organize music, text, and video materials for archiving. Establish the Xiuyan Northeast Drum Art Database and "Xiuyan Northeast Drum Collection" in order to develop and continue the art of Northeast Drum.
