The Flower Jumping Festival is the most solemn and long-standing traditional festival of the Miao people in Anshun. Legend has it that it was started by the Miao hero Yang Lu, and the Flower Jumping Hill outside the north gate of Anshun is still named after him. The word "Flower Jumping" is still a Chinese name, named after the flower trees planted on the slope, which is different from the Miao language. The Miao language calls Flower Jumping "Ou Dao", which means "climbing the slope". The Flower Jumping dates are all held in the first month of the lunar calendar, and there are still 24 fixed Flower Jumping slopes. During the festival, the Miao people, especially young men and women, wear festive costumes. Unmarried men carry more than a dozen or even dozens of exquisite back fans on their backs. If they have not found a partner, the women can ask their brothers to replace them. The women wrap silver bells, silver beads, silver chains and other decorations in their packages. Men blow the sheng and dance, while women shake bells and hold handkerchiefs to dance to the tune, dancing around the flower trees. There are competitions for climbing flower poles, shooting, sewing skills, martial arts performances, bullfighting and other cultural and sports activities. Each Flower Jumping Slope lasts for three days. On the first day, the Miao people planted flower trees. They saw the flower trees from afar and made preparations. On the next morning, they went to the empty village. On the third day, the flower dance ended. The guests stayed in the nearby Miao village for food and lodging, drank wine, played the sheng and played the strings, and had fun all night long. The flower trees were sent by the village elders to the homes of those who had been infertile for a long time. The infertile people were very happy to see them and hosted a banquet for the guests. Young men and women used this opportunity to choose their spouses, and the elderly played the sheng and flute to celebrate a good harvest. Today, the flower dance festival has become a grand festival participated by people of all ethnic groups. At that time, people from Anshun City and neighboring villages flocked to the festival.
