Gelao folk songs are popular in Huaqiao, Pingdichang, Qingyang, Wude, Jufeng, Longjing, Longtang, Baisha and other places in Shiqian County. Gelao folk songs are the most widely spread and the most melody-rich genre in the Shiqian Gelao settlements. They are often sung in the mountains and fields, and their content mainly reflects the marriage and love life of young Gelao men and women. Shiqian Gelao folk songs are regular in form and very free to sing. In the seven-character lyrics, the first four words are often freely sung at the pause and at the end of the sentence, showing the characteristics of the four-three sentence structure. The methods of moistening the cavity are adopted, such as sliding up the head of the sound, sliding down the tail of the sound, and filling with long sounds. Most of the melodies are free and unrestrained, reflecting the natural environment of the Wuling Mountain area with high mountains, deep valleys and rolling mountains. The Gelao folk songs sung in the mountains and fields, represented by "Sister Goes to the River to Wash Clothes", are regular in form, and the lyrics are almost all "square" four-sentence seven-word, that is, four sentences with one rhyme or two sentences overlap and one rhyme, and occasionally six sentences with seven words. In the seven-word lyrics, the tune is often freely swung at the pauses of the first four words and at the end of the sentence, showing the characteristics of the four-three sentence structure. The melody adopts the method of sliding up the head of the sound, sliding down the tail of the sound, and filling with long sounds. Most of the melodies are free and unrestrained, with ups and downs, reflecting the natural environment of the Wuling Mountain area with high mountains and deep valleys and long mountains. It is rich in content, diverse in form, short in structure, and humorous in language. It has research value in national culture and the marriage customs of the ancestors of the Gelao people. On May 24, 2021, it was approved by the State Council to be included in the fifth batch of national representative projects of intangible cultural heritage.
