Haicaiqiang of the Yi nationality is a well-known folk song variety of the Yunnan Yi nationality. It is also called Dapanjiang, Daobanjiang, and commonly known as Shipingqiang. It is mainly spread in the villages of the Yi Nisu people in Shiping County, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. Haicaiqiang of the Yi nationality in Shiping belongs to the folk song of Haicaiqiang variant. It is called "Four Major Qiangs" together with the other three variant tunes of Shayouqiang, Siqiang, and Wushanqiang. The Yi people call it "quzi". Haicaiqiang singing has a long history. In the process of formation and development, it was deeply influenced by the Han culture brought by Han immigrants in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. There are many records and poems about Haicaiqiang singing in local chronicles since the Qing Dynasty. A complete Haicaiqiang tune is usually composed of Juqiang, Kongqiang, Zhengqiqiang and Baihuaqiang. It has a complex structure and a large length. It is a large vocal suite composed of multiple sections, integrating solo, duet, lead singing, unison singing, chorus and other forms. Representative songs of Haicaiqiang include "Brother Sings a Little Song and Sister Comes to Learn" and "Shiping Olive Vegetable". As a traditional art form produced in a specific environment, Haicaiqiang has a high degree of adaptability and broad mass appeal in a specific ecological, social and cultural context. It has important value in the study of the history of development, cultural history, moral values, artistic thinking and the integration of Yi and Han cultures. The systematic excavation, rescue and research of ethnic minority folk songs represented by Haicaiqiang is also of positive significance for enriching and improving the research on China's traditional music system and music history. With the disappearance of the custom of "eating fire grass cigarettes" for male and female communication on which Haicaiqiang depends since the 1950s and the introduction of other cultural and entertainment forms, the singing of Haicaiqiang has gradually declined. There are few "song masters" and "song bosses" (both are honorific titles for famous singers) who can sing a complete set of Haicaiqiang. There are also few Haicaiqiang enthusiasts among the younger generation. Its inheritance is facing a serious crisis and needs to be protected urgently.
