The Dai Water Splashing Festival is also known as the "Buddha Bathing Festival". It is called "Bi Mai" (meaning New Year) in Dai language. The Dai people in Dehong area of Xishuangbanna also call this festival "Shang Han" and "Shang Jian". Both names are derived from Sanskrit, meaning turnover, change and transfer, referring to the fact that the sun has completed a cycle of the zodiac and has begun to transition to a new year. The Achang, De'ang, Bulang, Wa and other ethnic groups celebrate this festival. Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and other countries also celebrate the Water Splashing Festival. The Water Splashing Festival is usually held in mid-June of the Dai calendar (about ten days before and after the Qingming Festival in the lunar calendar) and is one of the most solemn traditional festivals in Xishuangbanna. Its contents include folk activities, art performances, economic and trade exchanges and other categories. Specific festival activities include water splashing, fairs, dragon boat racing, Buddha bathing, chanting, Zhangha singing, peacock dance, white elephant dance performances, etc. The Water Splashing Festival is the New Year of the Dai people. It originated in India and was once a religious ritual of Brahmanism. It was later absorbed by Buddhism and was introduced to the Dai area of Yunnan, China through Myanmar around the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century. With the increasing influence of "Southern Theravada" Buddhism in the Dai area, the custom of the Water Splashing Festival has become increasingly popular. Now, this festival has become the most important folk festival of the Dai people. During the festival, Dai men, women, old and young all wear festive costumes, carry clean water, first go to the Buddhist temple to bathe the Buddha, and then start splashing water on each other. The splashed clean water symbolizes auspiciousness, happiness and health. Young people also hold bright and crystal water drops in their hands, which symbolize sweet love. The Water Splashing Festival is a comprehensive stage that fully displays the traditional culture of the Dai people, such as water culture, music and dance culture, food culture, clothing culture and folk worship. It is an important window for studying the history of the Dai people and has high academic value. The Zhangha and White Elephant Dances, which are performed during the Water Splashing Festival, can bring people artistic enjoyment and help them understand the Dai people's national characteristics of appreciating nature, loving water and respecting Buddha, and being gentle and calm. At the same time, the Water Splashing Festival is also an important link to strengthen the unity of all ethnic groups in Xishuangbanna Prefecture, and plays a positive role in promoting friendly cooperation and exchanges between Xishuangbanna and Southeast Asian countries, and in promoting the development of the prefecture's social economy and culture.
