Tongwei paper-cutting, also known as paper-cutting and window paper-cutting, is an important part of Gansu paper-cutting and belongs to the Central Plains cultural system. However, due to the influence of geography, local customs and customs, paper-cutting in various parts of Gansu is also different. Longdong paper-cutting is inherited from northern Shaanxi paper-cutting, but some works are more primitive than folk paper-cutting in northern Shaanxi. In Longnan and Tianshui, the mountains and rivers are beautiful, and paper-cutting also shows its dexterity and refinement in its honesty and simplicity. In the arid area of Longzhong, the natural conditions are difficult, but the window paper-cutting paper-cutting in Tongwei, Dingxi is very unique. Tongwei window paper-cutting also has a beautiful and moving legend. In the distant past, there lived a loving couple here. One day, the husband Qin Jia was sent to Jiangnan by the government to work. His wife Xu Shu wrote poems about missing her husband. However, the clouds were cut off in Hengyang. Who could convey this endless longing for her? The clever Xu Shu cut out a paper crane. However, when the paper crane flew to Jiangnan with the poem in its mouth, Qin Jia had died in a foreign land. When the bad news came, the grief-stricken Xu Shu cut thousands of white flowers and scattered them on the mountains and valleys, and the mountains and valleys were covered with mourning clothes. From then on, every time the snow fluttered, the children of Tongwei used paper-cutting to commemorate the loving couple who depended on each other for life and death, and also to express people's yearning for pure love. According to the person in charge of the Tongwei County Cultural Center, Tongwei paper-cutting has been popular for a very long time. It is intertwined with many local customs and has become the most traditional custom for local people during the New Year. Tongwei paper-cutting is a traditional handicraft that blends with folk customs. At the end of the year and the beginning of the next year, rural women in towns such as Maying, Pingxiang, Hualing, and Beicheng, where paper-cutting is popular, mostly make window paper-cuts, spring leaves, face masks, board edge paper and other smoked cutting and carving work. Some people say that Tongwei paper-cutting has a simple and bright composition, smooth and capable lines, and a simple and thick style. It is a wonderful flower in the folk art of Longzhong. Tongwei window grilles are rich in colors and various in forms. They are mainly relief-carved, with single cuts, yin-yang compound cuts, and symmetrical cuts. They pay attention to the overall layout. The window grilles span the window lattices and are not restricted by the window panes. They focus on color matching and the virtual and real changes of points and lines. They organically absorb the structural composition of the flower and wood grids of ancient buildings. They are neat and beautiful, highly decorative, and have a magnificent effect. The most common forms of Tongwei window grilles are "round flowers and clouds", "chessboards", "inlaid windows" and other decorations, which are the most classic formats of window grilles in Longzhong, Gansu.
