Shimen is located in the border of northern Hunan, in the northwest of the county, with mountains stretching out, which is the place where the ancient Ba people lived. Before the Yuan Dynasty, it belonged to the "Dong Man". From the end of the Yuan Dynasty to the beginning of the Ming Dynasty to the 13th year of Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty (1735 AD), it was governed by the hereditary native official Tianping Qianhu. Shimen Tujia folk songs were nurtured in this vast and mysterious mountain. They are circulated in 19 towns and villages in the county, and are concentrated in Moshi Town, Luoping Township, Huping Mountain, Ziliang Township and other places in the northwest of Shimen County. Sangzhi County, which borders Shimen, and neighboring marginal towns such as Hefeng County, Wufeng County, and Songzi County in Hubei Province are also circulated. Shimen Tujia folk songs have a long history. Experts have verified that it originated from the "Ba people's Ba songs" in the Shang and Zhou Dynasties. According to the content, it can be divided into four categories: labor, love, current affairs, and narrative; according to the singing form, it can be divided into solo, duet (pan song, Jie song), chorus, etc.; according to the tune, it can be divided into high tune and flat tune. Its music has strong regional characteristics. The set song "Fantianyun" has high, bright and sharp pronunciation, which is very penetrating. The songs such as Liuliu, Buddy Songs and Lalacheche are embedded with Tujia dialect lyrics, which are full of the wild beauty of mountain life. The melodies of mule driving and tea picking are long and low, full of musical appeal. The lyrics of Shimen Tujia folk songs are mostly in Tujia dialect, among which the five-sentence folk songs are unique, which fully, truly and vividly reflect the folk customs and production life of this ethnic region. It is a "living fossil" for studying and understanding Bachu culture and Xiang-Hubei Tujia culture. It has important research value and aesthetic value for the linguistics, history, archaeology, folklore and folk music of this region. With the decline of traditional farming culture and the impact of modern media culture, coupled with the large number of young and strong laborers in mountainous areas going out to work, there is a lack of successors for young singers, and Shimen Tujia folk songs are facing the crisis of being lost. The Shimen County Party Committee and the County Government attach great importance to the rescue and protection of Shimen Tujia folk songs. In recent years, they have organized a professional working team to collect more than 3,100 folk songs, compiled 32 scores, and organized the "Hunan-Hubei Border Folk Song Competition" and the "Shimen Folk Song Competition" many times. In 2008, Luoping Township was awarded the "National Folk Culture and Art Township" by the Ministry of Culture as the hometown of folk songs.
