Bamboo horse dance is also called "bamboo horse lantern", "horse lantern dance", "horse running dance" and "horse running lantern". It is popular in Yiyang and Yuanjiang area. It is also called "lantern boat". Jiaqing's "Mr. Cui Dongbi's Biography" said: "There are lantern boat plays on Lantern Festival and Dragon Boat Festival". According to the "Yuanjiang County Chronicle" in 1808, "During the Lantern Festival, people cut ribbons to make lanterns, including dragon lanterns, lion lanterns and horse lanterns, or play puppets in front of the courtyard to celebrate the arrival of the festival." Bamboo horses are made of bamboo strips to make horse heads and bodies, and gauze is sewn on the horse heads and bodies to light candles. There is an empty hole in the middle of the horse body, where the performer can stand. A bright red flower is hung on the horse head, and a bell is hung on the horse neck. The bamboo horse is cleverly hung on the dancer with a rope, and the horse body is surrounded by colorful cloth and hung on the ground. The dancer pulls the reins with one hand and holds other props with the other hand, running horse steps, which looks like a knight. Bamboo horse lanterns are mostly performed by folk professional troupes to play the stories of drama characters, such as Zhao Zilong saving his master at Changbanpo, Yang Zhongbao and Mu Guiying, Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, and the eight tigers fighting for Youzhou. The performance actions include: exploring the road, training horses, leading the way, tiger roaring and horses startled, and horses flying. The accompaniment is drums, gongs and banknotes. The atmosphere is warm. Most of the performances are during the Spring Festival, especially at the border with Ningxiang.
