Circling the coffin

Hubei
🎧  Listen to Introduction

The coffin-circling dance, commonly known as "da rao guan", is the most popular sacrificial dance in the city. When an old person dies, it is called "baixi", and it is very lively. On the night before the burial, it is called "zuo ye", and generally 57 folk artists will sing and dance around the coffin, forming the climax of the funeral activities. The coffin-circling dance is rough and bold, strong and exaggerated. The main movements include "bending the bow and shooting arrows", "holding the moon in the arms", "tiger going down the mountain", "rhinoceros looking at the moon", "two dragons playing with pearls", "yellow dragon wrapped around the waist", "mandarin ducks stretching their legs", "eagles and cranes spreading their wings", "carp going ashore", etc., which imitate the production and life scenes of the people. In January 2011, the coffin-circling dance was announced as the third batch of intangible cultural heritage of Enshi Prefecture.
