The knife dance is a tradition passed down from the ancient times of the Jingpo people. It evolved from a martial art and has a long history, but its origins cannot be verified. It is mainly spread in the Jingpo settlements in Longchuan County, Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture. The Jingpo knife dance, called "Shan Qian Ge" in Jingpo language, is one of the representative dances in the Jingpo folk dance. It is a vigorous male dance that is not restricted by time, place, or the number of dancers. It is particularly popular during festivals and celebrations of harvest, weddings, and entering new houses. It can also be used to strengthen the body. The performance forms are divided into "single knife" and "double knife". During the performance, squatting, jumping, and fast and flexible footsteps are often used. The knife is swung with arms, chopped, cut, swept, and lifted. The double-handed knife dance is like a wheel, with dense knife light, seamless left and right, and free to move forward and backward. The performers dance with knives to the accompaniment of double-sided drums, elephant foot drums, 铓, gongs, and bamboo flutes, stepping on the cheerful melody of "Wenbang Sangbi" music. The performance routines mainly include three steps, five steps, seven steps, nine steps, thirteen steps, etc. The Jingpo knife dance is currently widely carried out in various places, and most of them are organized by the villagers themselves. The main way of inheritance is that the learners themselves become apprentices. Now some Jingpo villages also organize young men in the village to be taught by masters with superb skills. When they first learn, they usually use wooden swords, bamboo swords, etc., and they can use real swords after they are proficient. The content of the current knife dance can not only reflect fighting, but also reflect the production, life and joyful emotions of the Jingpo people. The music of the dance has also absorbed some modern music elements. In addition to the artistic processing of the dance performance, the knife dance has both strong national characteristics and a contemporary atmosphere. The Jingpo knife dance is highly entertaining and is one of the folk methods of fitness and strengthening the body. The dance style is vigorous, heroic, chic, cheerful and unique. In 1979, it participated in the National Minority Wushu Performance Competition, in 1992, it participated in the Guangzhou "Zhonghualijie Expo", in 1996 it was broadcast on CCTV "-", and from 2000 to 2004, it went to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and other places to perform, showing the unique ethnic characteristics of the Jingpo knife dance.
