Xiangshan Opening and Thanking Ocean Festival includes fishermen's sacrificial activities and traditional folk art performances, and has a history of more than a thousand years. "Opening Ocean Festival" is a folk activity for fishermen to pray for safety and good harvest when fishing boats go out to sea. "Thanking Ocean Festival" is a folk activity for fishermen to thank the sea for the safe return of fishing boats. The original meaning of these activities is to hope that the gods will bless them to have a smooth sailing and return with a full load. As a spiritual sustenance for fishermen, Opening Ocean Festival and Thanking Ocean Festival mainly have two major sections: entertaining gods and entertaining people. With sacrifice as the core, it has the characteristics of diversity of sacrificial objects (Queen of Heaven, City God, General Wang Bodhisattva, Fish Master Emperor, etc.), wide range of sacrificial sites (temples, coasts, docks, ports, fishing grounds, etc.), diversity of sacrificial forms and contents (including worship of boat dragons, Opening Ocean Festival, Thanking Ocean Festival, Xiaohai Festival, Taiping Festival, Fish Master Festival, etc.), and uniqueness of sacrificial purpose (safe sea and good fish harvest). With folk art performances as the main axis, it contains many cultural contents such as history, religion, production, and folk customs. It is a traditional folk cultural activity that contains many cultural contents such as history, religion, and folk customs formed by the people in Xiangshan fishing area in their long-term production and life. Since late August 2002, a folk customs research and investigation team of Jiangnan coastal fishing villages composed of 13 Chinese and Japanese folk experts has visited Dongmen Island for four consecutive times to investigate folk culture. The "Xieyang Competition" held on June 23, 2003 of the lunar calendar and the "Mazu Birthday Opening Ceremony" held on the 23rd day of the lunar calendar in 2007 on Dongmen Island have been reported by many news media and affirmed by experts and scholars. Its excavation and rescue not only has high academic research value for the history of sacrifice in China's coastal areas, but also has high research value in folklore and the history of Sino-Japanese exchanges.
