Xiangshan Ship Model Making
The earliest ship model making in Xiangshan can be traced back to the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty. First, a green-headed ship model (Fujian-style merchant ship model) was donated by Fujianese to be placed on the left beam of the main hall of General Wang Temple in Dongmen as a mascot. Later, the villagers made a Dongmen fishing boat model and placed it on the right beam, forming a pair, implying the safety of the fishermen and the harvest of fisheries. Since then, fishermen have been making various ship models by themselves, such as Zhan Mengfu, a 73-year-old fisherman from Dongmen, Wang Yuesheng, a 61-year-old from Xiaotang, and Xie Peixiang, a 64-year-old from Juexi, who are all masters of making ship models. There are about hundreds of types of ship models they made, such as antique ship models including enthronement ship, Zheng He treasure ship, Xiangshan Tang ship, Qianlong cruise ship, Tang ship, Jianzhen East ferry ship, Caofang ship, ancient warship, Wanhu Shenzhou, etc.; fishing boats include small sampans, small pairs of ships, large fishing boats, motor sailing boats, drift net boats, shrimp trawler, Juexi fishing boat, Hepu duckbill boat, Fujian small fishing boat, steel fishing boat, etc.; others include ferries, tankers, offshore ice fresh ships, multinational export ships, fishery administration ships, Datang pointed ships, container ships, green-headed merchant ships, green eyebrow ships, etc. Each ship module is miniaturized according to the proportion of the real ship, and is made by hand or with the help of some necessary machinery. The materials used are wood, bamboo, paint, nails, small ropes, cloth, tung oil, lime, etc. The production tools are mainly saws, chisels, planes, drills, carving knives, scissors, needles, threads and other common utensils. In the 1990s, the Dongmen Aijiao Base "Tianmen Pavilion" was established. It not only displays ancient and modern ship models, but also hired some retired old artists to make and pass on the ship model skills. The Ningbo Cultural Management Committee also invited Zhan Mengfu and others to Tianyi Pavilion to make ship models. Now the local government plans to build a place dedicated to exhibition and making ship models on the basis of protecting this skill so that it can be passed on.
