🎧  Listen to Introduction

The stone carving craft of Bagou has a long history, dating back to the Neolithic period. It has been passed down from generation to generation by artists until now. Now this carving craft is still passed down in Bagou and surrounding areas. According to investigations, stone leaves, stone knives, scrapers about 7,000 years old, stone statues about 4,000 years old, stone coffins and epitaphs of the eldest princess in the Liao and Jin dynasties, large-scale round-carved stone sheep, stone tigers, stone monkeys, stone Weng Zhong and stone lions, etc., have been found in the county. These large-scale round-carved statues have simple shapes, delicate carvings, and lifelike shapes of sheep, tigers and monkeys. They are treasures of carving art in the Liao and Jin dynasties. Although the stone carving technology of Bagou began in the Neolithic Age and has continued to this day, the names and works of the carving artists are known to be Feng Yu and Feng Shen from Shuanghe Village, Huangtuliangzi Town, Pingquan County in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China. This traditional carving art of Bagou stone carving has existed in Pingquan and surrounding areas since the Neolithic Age. The Neolithic period dating back more than 7,000 years was discovered at the Huazidong site in Dangba Town, Pingquan County. The jade pig dragon carvings, a world treasure, were found in the Hongshan Culture site in Chifeng, more than 100 kilometers away from Pingquan. Stone statues were found in the Xiajiadian Upper and Lower Culture Site in Dingzicheng, Pingquan County during the Shang and Zhou Dynasties. The stone lions found in the Huizhoucheng site in Pingquan County during the Liao and Jin Dynasties and the large stone sculptures of stone sheep, stone tigers, stone monkeys, and stone Wengzhong found in Shihu Village, Liuxi Township. The stone coffin and stone tablet of the eldest princess' tomb were found in Toudaoyingzi Village, Menghewusu Township, and the stone lion statues in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China period, which shows that the "Bagou Stone Carving Technique" in Pingquan County is very old and has a long history. This carving technique was created by the hard work of the working people for many years, is the crystallization of the wisdom of the older generation, and is the essence of carving art. Although the Bagou stone carving craft has a long history and there are still inheritors who are engaged in this craft, because the current carving artists are all over 40 years old and young people are unwilling to engage in this craft, this craft is now facing the risk of being lost.
