Engraving technique
Chiseling is an independent traditional handicraft in my country. Chiseling can refer to tools used for chiseling metal and stone, or carving on metal and stone. It was first created in the Xia and Zhou dynasties and flourished in the Tang Dynasty, with a history of more than 3,000 years. Due to its long history, strong expressiveness, and wide range of applications, chiseling can be applied to processing procedures including bone, wood, stone, gold, and silver. By hammering the chisel, the chisel is deformed on the metal blank, and the chisel is struck with a hammer, and various patterns are formed while it is being struck. Then it is finely processed to make it concave and convex, staggered, and clear in light and dark. The main chiseling techniques include forging, hammering, carving, straightening, hooking, stringing, dotting, lifting, pressing, picking, and discing. Since the establishment of Fang Jiuhua Silver Shop in 1856, Fang Jiuhua has been based in Shanghai. Its engraving technicians have inherited and developed the traditional Chinese engraving skills, absorbed the Shanghai Haipai and Western art styles, mixed the strengths of various schools, pursued the appreciation of both the refined and the popular, and integrated the ancient and modern local and foreign cultures. In the environment where Shanghai and Western cultures meet and blend, they have integrated, learned from each other, and continuously improved, forming the unique Shanghai Fang Jiuhua engraving art characteristics of "fine engraving, inlaid gilding, combination of Chinese and Western, mixed materials, and luxurious and gorgeous". By exploring the combination of engraving and different materials, many engraving art works have been created, such as: engraving inlaid bones, stones, jade; engraving gold and silver utensils; copper, tin, alloy, stainless steel urban landscape sculptures, indoor and outdoor reliefs, plaque engraving works; modern synthetic materials and pottery and porcelain inlaid engraving works, etc., which greatly expanded the development space of engraving technology and enriched the expression form of engraving technology.
