Jingdezhen Traditional Blue and White Porcelain Production Technique (Second Batch Provincial Level) Blue and white porcelain refers to a kind of underglaze colored porcelain that is colored with cobalt on the porcelain body, then applied with transparent glaze, and fired at a high temperature of nearly 1300 degrees Celsius. The underglaze cobalt material is blue after high temperature firing, which is customarily called "blue and white". Mature blue and white porcelain was successfully created and fired by Jingdezhen porcelain workers in the middle and late Yuan Dynasty. Since then, blue and white porcelain has been prosperous for hundreds of years. The production of traditional blue and white porcelain has a complete set of production processes. In the eighth year of Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty (1743), Tang Ying, the supervisor of pottery, compiled "Taoye Tushuo" according to the emperor's order and the twenty porcelain making pictures handed over by the palace. It summarizes the production process and production techniques of blue and white porcelain, including blue material processing techniques, painting decoration techniques and blank body glazing techniques. The blue material used in traditional blue and white porcelain is natural cobalt ore. After the ore is taken, it needs to be calcined and then selected. Based on their experience, porcelain workers distinguish which materials are used for painting fine porcelain, which materials are used for coarse porcelain, and which materials are discarded. The selected blue pigments must be fully ground into fine powder using a mortar, and then mixed into different pigments. Blue and white pigments are divided into outline materials and water-dividing materials. The traditional techniques of blue and white painting and decoration include picture design, drafting, outline, and water-dividing. The picture design can be done on paper or on the body, but it must be considered in combination with the shape, specifications, and curved surfaces of the decorative parts of the product. The so-called drafting is the operation of transferring the picture design to cotton paper or rough paper for easy repeated drawing. Outline is to use blue and white materials to outline the image of decorative patterns on the body. Painters must have the skills of using the brush, with smooth and continuous lines and uniform thickness of thick lines. Water-dividing for rendering and coloring requires higher skills. First of all, we must master the material properties. Blue and white water-dividing materials are divided into five colors: first thick, second thick, second thick, first light, and shadow light. Different techniques must be mastered, including flat water separation, deep and shallow water separation, color connection, color covering and color extension. The brush-handling skills during water separation are very important. The strength and speed of the brush-handling should be controlled according to the thickness of the body and the amount of water in the water-difference pen. The brush-handling should be smooth and completed in one go. After the porcelain body is painted and decorated, it needs to be glazed. The glaze used in traditional blue and white porcelain is a unique lime glaze in Jingdezhen. The traditional glazing methods are mainly dipping and blowing. The glazing and glazing technology is an important aspect of the traditional blue and white porcelain production skills.
