Dafeng Diabolo
Diabolo is a traditional sports, recreation and acrobatics item on the fourth batch of representative items of Yancheng's municipal intangible cultural heritage. During the Three Kingdoms period, Cao Zhi wrote "Diabolo Fu". Taking this as the earliest record of diabolo, its history is at least 1,700 years old. In Chapter 110 of "Water Margin", Song Jiang saw someone playing "Hu Qiao" on the way to conquer Fang La. Inspired by the grace of Su Taiwei's recommendation, he wrote a poem: "One low and one high, the loud sound penetrates the blue sky. There is a lot of heroic strength in vain, but no one supports it." Of course, the novel was written by later generations, but it also shows that diabolo was already very common in the era of the writer. According to the description in "A Brief Account of the Scenery of the Capital in Spring" by Liu Dong and Yu Yizheng in the late Ming Dynasty: "The hollow bell is made of wood with a hollow center and a side opening, which is filled with asphalt and placed on the ground like an inverted bell, with the handle flat on top. A rope is wound around the handle, and a bamboo ruler with holes is used to measure the rope and put it against the hollow bell. The rope is tightened to the right, and the bamboo ruler is tightened to the left. Once tightened, the hollow bell will roar and spin rapidly. A large bell will make a sound like a bell, and a small bell will make a sound like a dung fly. The bell stops when the sound stops. The diameter can be made from one inch to eight or nine inches. It can be set free by one to three people." This means, The hollow bell is "hollowed out in the wood (actually cut into small pieces of bamboo), with a small hole on the side (a small hole is opened in the bamboo piece)", and a semicircular bamboo is placed in the mouth to form a "whistle". The upper and lower sections of the bamboo piece are sealed with thin wooden boards to form a wind box; a bamboo stick is passed through the center of the board, which is longer at the top and shorter at the bottom, and a thick string is wrapped around the long handle, "a bamboo ruler with a hole is inserted", and the string is passed through the hole of the bamboo ruler, tightened, and then released quickly, and the hollow bell will rotate continuously on the ground and make a whistle (the air flows into the hole and is discharged due to the high pressure). The hollow bell is the early name of the diabolo. Unlike now, when playing with it, the action is not shaking, and its rotation is not in the air, but on the ground. According to the "Overseas Precious Lacquerware" compiled by Qin Xiaoyi, there is a "carved red round box with baby play patterns", and the lid of the box is engraved with a picture of baby play. In the picture, a child is shaking the diabolo, and another child next to him is watching with his ears covered. The diabolo is disc-shaped, with a wooden shaft in the middle, and the bamboo stick is tied with a string to wrap around the wooden shaft to pull and shake. The way of playing the diabolo in this painting is exactly the same as the way it is now. It is understood that this red lacquer box was made during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty. If the scene is true, then it can be said that as early as the early Ming Dynasty, the shape characteristics and playing methods of the diabolo were quite mature. By the Qing Dynasty, playing the diabolo had developed into a popular acrobatic program. On the basis of the original tricks, acrobats created many new tricks and difficult techniques. The performance was integrated with graceful dance postures and pleasant accompaniment music, which further improved people's aesthetic taste. The diabolo is in the shape of a disc, with a wooden shaft in the middle. The wooden shaft is pulled and shaken by tying a bamboo stick with a string. The diabolo is divided into two types: single wheel (one end of the wooden shaft is a disc) and double wheel (one disc at each end of the wooden shaft). There are whistle holes around the disc, with a large whistle hole as the bass hole and several small whistle holes as the treble holes, which are divided into double, four, six, and even thirty-six sounds. When pulling and shaking the diabolo, each whistle sounds at the same time, high-pitched and vigorous, and the sound reaches the sky. The operating techniques of diabolo include throwing high, swaying the pole, changing hands, one line two, one line three and many other forms. Jiang Wenbao's fancy diabolo is based on traditional diabolo skills and has created a new way of playing diabolo with many tricks. It is deeply loved and respected by diabolo enthusiasts. Many of his unique skills are rooted in the traditional diabolo concept. The materials and shaking methods have been greatly improved and changed, shaking to a new height and new taste. In addition to winning various awards, some of his unique skills have been successfully applied for the Guinness World Record. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
