🎧  Listen to Introduction

Woodblock New Year pictures are a traditional folk work for celebrating the Spring Festival. They are mostly simple and exaggerated, combining realism with decoration, people with scenery, to express themes such as joy, happiness and auspiciousness. Long'an Village, Yashan, Siqian Town, Xinhui District is the second existing folk production workshop after Foshan. It has a unique local folk style in the use of paper, paint, stereotypes and picture modeling. Printing New Year pictures requires several colorings. First, the lines of the characters are outlined with templates, and then accessories are used to print the details such as the headdress of the characters, the gold edges of the clothes, and the pendants on the body. Now, only Guan Bo's family in Long'an Village has woodblock New Year picture stereotypes, and the only remaining set of templates has a history of more than 300 years.
