🎧  Listen to Introduction

Chenliji Pharmaceutical Factory, located in Guangzhou, is an important representative of traditional Chinese medicine in southern my country and is known as "Guangdong Medicine". It was founded by Chen Tiquan and Li Shengzuo during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. According to the agreement of "working together to help the world and bringing prosperity", they named their Chinese herbal medicine store "Chenliji" with their respective surnames. It has a history of more than 400 years. In the late Qing Dynasty, Emperor Tongzhi granted the title of "Xinghetang" to Chenliji because of its miraculous effects. It became a registered trademark in the early years of the Republic of China and is still used today, so it is also known as "Xinghetang Chenliji". Chenliji started small-scale production with a store in front and a factory in the back in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. Due to its growing reputation, by the end of the 1940s, it had opened branches in Foshan, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Macau, Singapore and Taiwan. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was expanded to Guangzhou Chenliji United Pharmaceutical Factory and entered a new period of development. When Chenliji was founded, it took "working together to help the world" as the foundation of its establishment, which later became the core of the traditional Chinese medicine culture of Chenliji formed over hundreds of years, and thus formulated a set of rules and regulations with rich cultural connotations. Its pharmaceutical manufacturing adheres to the principle of "the craftsmanship must not be reduced despite the complexity, and the materials must not be reduced despite the variety of tastes". The selection of materials must be of the highest quality, and Yin branches must be used instead of Yang branches, and rhizomes must be used instead of leaves. The skin and flesh of medicinal materials must be separated to enhance the efficacy, and they must not be mixed for the sake of saving labor, which reflects the pharmaceutical concept of quality first; its century-old couplets that still exist today, which read "fire and civil and military coordination, medicine distinguishes the monarch and ministers to save the world", are always from the perspective of the drug users, and the technical specifications for various processing methods are also moral requirements for drug preparation; it announces to the society that "Xinghetang helps the needy", and whenever there are people in the neighborhood of the store who are in emergency or distress, they will help and give medicine to save them, reflecting a humanitarian spirit. Since its establishment, Chenliji has been committed to collecting folk ancient prescriptions, proven prescriptions, and secret prescriptions, and has attached great importance to inheriting the ancient Chinese medicine culture, while constantly creating new medicines and inventing new processes. More than 300 years ago, it pioneered the unique process of wax-shell-wrapped pills to prevent moisture, mildew, and moth, and it is still used today and is world-famous; the Dahuo Luo Pills, Wuji Baifeng Pills, Zhuifeng Suhe Pills, and later Zhuangyao Jianshen Pills, Houjiling Capsules, etc. created in the same period are all known as "ancient prescription medicines" at home and abroad for their reliable quality and definite efficacy, showing its creative and dynamic cultural characteristics. As one of the earliest Chinese medicine large-scale production entities in my country, Chenliji has entered the list of "Chinese time-honored brands" with its long history. In 2008, Chenliji's traditional Chinese medicine culture was selected into the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage lists. The City of Guangzhou attaches great importance to the protection of Chenliji's traditional Chinese medicine culture. In 2004, a large-scale Chenliji Chinese Medicine Museum was built. However, due to its age and vicissitudes, many precious materials and objects have been scattered and lost, and there is an urgent need to strengthen excavation, collection and rescue.
