Chaozhou woodcarving has a long history. Kaiyuan Temple in Chaozhou, built in the 26th year of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty (738), has Tang Dynasty woodcarving works. Guangdong's woodcarving skills are mainly concentrated in Chaozhou, Shantou and Jieyang, and they are collectively called "Chaozhou woodcarving" in history. Chaozhou woodcarving is exquisitely crafted, and is known as one of the four major woodcarvings in my country, along with boxwood carving, Dongyang woodcarving and Fujian woodcarving. It is famous at home and abroad for its wide range of themes, full composition, fine carving, multi-layer hollowing, and magnificent features. Jieyang woodcarving usually exists in the form of decorations or components of buildings, furniture and offerings to gods, and is often decorated with gold lacquer or color painting. It has a wide range of themes, mostly depicting flowers, birds, insects, fish, and historical legends and opera stories that people love to hear and talk about. There are many forms of carving, including sunken carving, relief carving, through carving, round carving, and ground carving, and through carving is the best. Jieyang woodcarving generally adopts a flexible modeling method, using perceptual and dynamic lines and surfaces, and using arcs, curves and the parabolic and curved surfaces generated by them to form the modeling. The composition is full, the layout is symmetrical, and the knife techniques are complicated but not chaotic, reflecting the beauty of rhythm and rhyme. Jieyang woodcarving is also called "gold lacquer woodcarving". When making it, the rough blank is first chiseled on camphor wood or fir wood, then finely carved, then polished, layered with lacquer, and finally affixed with gold foil to achieve a magnificent artistic effect. Shantou woodcarving has a long history, which began in the Tang Dynasty and flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is widely used and has rich themes. Folk legends, ancient and modern figures, flowers, birds, insects, fish, birds and beasts, river and sea aquatic animals, drama stories, etc. are all common themes of expression. Shantou has many famous woodcarving masters, and their works have won many awards in national competitions. At present, the development of Chaozhou woodcarving is hindered. Due to the low income of the industry, most young people are unwilling to learn. The surviving craftsmen are all over 50 years old, and there is no successor. If it is not rescued quickly, the prospects are worrying.
