Kick-drum Yangko is a folk dance art deeply loved by the masses in northern Shanxi. It is most popular in towns and villages such as Shuo County, Pinglu, Shanyin, Ying County, Huairen, Shenchi, Fengzhen, and Jining. All local Yangko actors can perform Kick-drum Yangko. Kick-drum Yangko originated from the activities of indigenous residents to worship the ancestors of the field and pray for a good harvest. With the development of history, it has gradually developed into an entertainment activity dominated by small square and street performances in the Han and Tang Dynasties. In the Song Dynasty, according to the old artists Xue Hong and Chang Hai in the late Qing Dynasty, after the Liangshan heroes "recruited and fell", Dong Ping, Liu Tang, Hu Yanzhuo and others drifted to Shuozhou and the local "dance house" masses to compose stories such as "preparing horses for the expedition" and "killing the four gates with a knife" of the Liangshan heroes to commemorate the feats of their ancestors. Year after year, the Kick-drum Yangko dance has gradually formed. Kick-drum Yangko is often performed in activities such as the Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, birthday celebrations, worshipping sons-in-law, and fulfilling vows upon invitation. After liberation, it has also been added to activities such as thanking the families of military martyrs. The performance venues are usually on the streets, squares, and courtyards. The male role is called "Kiguzi" and the female role is called "Lahua". The steps of Kiguzi are big and vigorous, and the performance is passionate and unrestrained; the steps of Lahua are small and trembling, and the performance is graceful and soft. There are three types of performances: large venues, small venues, and cross-street venues. The number of performers and programs depend on the form. The duel dance is similar to the duel in martial arts. The large venue is prosperous and lively, with great momentum and intricate formations. Performers in small venues need to have excellent skills and skilled techniques.
