Iron Fireworks
"Iron fireworks" are commonly known as "iron plowshares" (plowshares melt molten iron and scatter it into the air). It is a festival fire activity popular in Shangdang area. The iron smelting industry is prosperous in Changzhi area. In the old days, on the 15th day of the second lunar month or the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, local people had the custom of scattering molten iron between the branches and leaves under the old Sophora japonica tree. People chose this method to express their sympathy for the "ghosts who died unjustly", hoping that they could be reborn as adults like the iron tree blooming, thus forming the custom of making iron fireworks on Ghost Festival. Later, with the development of society, "iron fireworks" gradually evolved into a festival fire custom for people to relax their bodies and minds after intense work and pray for a rich life. The custom of "iron fireworks" is inseparable from local traditional festivals, mainly "Tiancang Festival", "Laojun Festival", "Shennong Festival", "Lantern Festival" and so on. When making iron fireworks, the scrap iron after casting ironware should be used, which is melted into molten iron in a crucible. A special person is responsible for carrying out the molten iron. The key to "iron fireworks" lies in the word "hit". Experienced artists scoop out the molten iron and put it on a wooden board. They hold another hitting board and hit the end of the molten iron. The molten iron is hit out and hits the branches, shooting thousands of rays of light into the air, blooming in the sky, and falling like meteor showers, dazzling. At this time, the artists rotate the "fire umbrella", run the "fire bull", and fly the "fire dragon". The vivid performances form a colorful picture of folk customs. In order to prevent being burned by the splashing iron flowers, the artists who make iron fireworks usually wear a hat soaked in water and wear the old sheepskin coat inside out. The spoon in their hands is made of wood and needs to be soaked in water for a day before it will not burn. "Iron fireworks" originated from the production practice of the working people and are closely related to people's production and life.
