Shanghai
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Shikumen Lane Construction Skills Shikumen Lanes combine the traditional courtyard-style layout of Jiangnan folk houses with the adjacent form of European townhouses. It is a unique Chinese and Western residential architectural style in Shanghai. It is mainly distributed in Luwan, Huangpu, Hongkou, Zhabei, Jing'an, Xuhui and other districts in the center of Shanghai, among which Luwan District has the largest number and the most complete types. Shikumen Lane Construction was born in the Shanghai Concession in the mid-19th century. It was built by traditional Chinese craftsmen and was a row of simple houses for Chinese people to live in. It was named "Li". With the entry of foreign construction companies into the concession, the construction method changed. In 1880, the first batch of modern construction factories in Shanghai were born, marking the formation of Shikumen Lane Construction Skills. In 1910, the French Concession in Luwan District promulgated the "Regulations on Highways, Buildings, etc.", which standardized the requirements for lane housing. From drawing design, construction registration, material prefabrication, decorative art to construction, a complete process was formed, and a rich and diverse Shikumen Lane was built. After liberation, the construction skills of Shikumen lanes were transformed into maintenance and repair methods, and have been passed down to this day. Because the door frame of Shikumen is made of stone strips, and in Shanghai dialect, using one thing to wrap another thing is called "hoop", so it is called "stone hoop door", and later it is homophonic to "Shikumen". Shikumen lane construction has undergone a series of adjustments and innovations based on the characteristics of the times, regional characteristics and residential needs, and has evolved into improved lane forms such as Cantonese lanes, new lanes, garden lanes, and apartment lanes. The construction skills of Shikumen lanes grasp the humanized scale of space, widely adopt new technologies and new processes for urban residential construction, and use overall procurement, batch construction, componentization and processization of technical processes, forming an economical and industrialized residential building construction method. The richness and innovative characteristics of this construction technique constitute a unique Shanghai-style architectural technique. As a brand-new architectural style, it is a symbol of Shanghai people's pioneering a new life different from the traditional way and moving towards a new civilization. At the same time, it is very meaningful that it has created an unprecedented and special urban landscape for Shanghai. Since the 1940s, the construction of Shikumen lanes has basically stopped, and its construction skills have only been maintained in the repair and maintenance of houses. At the end of the last century, with the large-scale transformation and development of Shanghai, Shikumen lanes began to be demolished one after another. As for the remaining Shikumen lanes, due to long-term unreasonable use, modern living needs and the original design functions of Shikumen houses have also had a great conflict, resulting in the existing Shikumen lane buildings facing the crisis of being completely demolished. Shikumen lanes are a unique and non-renewable cultural heritage in my country, and a display of Shanghai's urban personality and the essence of historical and cultural features. Therefore, it is urgent to protect the remaining Shikumen so that it can carry the memory of the years and shine in the new era in the new historical period. At the same time, summarizing and studying the construction skills of Shikumen lanes is also urgent, and it should become an important topic in the current protection of intangible cultural heritage.
