Pingyao Yongqingzhai (predecessor of Baolongzhai) shoe shop was founded in the fifth year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1866). It is famous for its handmade thousand-layer cloth shoes and embroidered shoes. The shop is located in the south of the Ming and Qing Street Market in the ancient city. Its handmade shoemaking craftsmanship has been passed down for more than a hundred years. Baolongzhai's thousand-layer cloth shoes have always used traditional handmade methods, and the production process is rigorous and unique. The materials are carefully selected and the workmanship is fine. It is difficult, time-consuming, and has many processes. It takes nearly a hundred processes to make a pair of shoes. Each process has written requirements, and it takes four or five days to make a pair of shoes. The handmade soles have 81 stitches per square inch, and a pair of shoes requires more than 2,100 stitches. The hemp rope is thick and the needle eye is fine. It is tightened by hand, and the stitches must be evenly spaced. When sewing shoes by hand, the last is tightened, flat and fit, and the stitches of the shoes must be evenly spaced. The production process can be roughly divided into the preparation stage (feeling the upper, sizing, cutting the upper, and binding the back), the synthesis of the upper and the sole (stripping the hemp rope, sewing the sole, pounding the sole, cutting the back), sewing the shoes (stretching the upper, sewing the shoes, sewing the pads, shaping, drying, checking and storing the shoes), and embroidery (designing the draft, matching colors and hand embroidery). The main production tools include splints, hawk-billed pliers, vise pliers, boards, shoe handles, shoe scrapers, crutch needles, awls, shoe lasts, cutting knives, shoe scrapers, trimming knives, hooks, etc. The products include six categories and more than 100 varieties, including thousand-layer cloth shoes, cowhide cloth shoes, embroidered shoes, old longevity shoes, children's shoes, casual shoes, and stage shoes. Baolongzhai thousand-layer cloth shoes are made of pure natural materials, such as pure wool, pure cotton, cowhide, hemp rope, etc., and are carefully processed and made. They are characterized by being "soft and comfortable, breathable and moisture-absorbent, keeping out the cold in winter, absorbing sweat in summer, and curing athlete's foot", and have a protective effect on the feet.
