The Wutaishan stone inkstone carving technique is popular in Hebian Town, Dingxiang County and its surrounding areas. The area is rich in stone resources for making inkstones. The Dingxiang County Annals states: "The earliest arts and crafts industry in this county is the stone carving industry. During the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, the inkstone making industry in Hebian, in particular, became even more famous. The China Industrial Annals states that in 1935 (the 24th year of the Republic of China), there were 12 inkstone-making households in Hebian Village, with 35 employees, an annual output of 31,800 boxes of stone inkstones, and an output value of 12,720 yuan (silver yuan)." In 1952, the "Rhinoceros Moon-gazing Inkstone" made during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty was unearthed locally, proving that the stone inkstone carving technique is very old. Wutaishan stone inkstone is mainly made of Wenshi on Wenshan Mountain in Hebian Town, Dingxiang County. The process from quarrying to finished product requires a total of seven processes: 1. Quarrying, first use hammers, chisels and other tools to remove the surrounding rocks, and then select stones suitable for making inkstones. For stones that can be used to design unique patterns and shapes based on their colors and shapes, they must be carefully selected and separated. 2. Each work is carefully studied and carefully carved to make it as unified as possible in style, craftsmanship and production, with moderate proportions and reasonable structure.
