There is a saying in Jinzhong that is well-known to everyone: "There are three treasures in Pingyao Ancient City: lacquerware, beef and long yam". Among the three treasures of the ancient city, lacquerware is listed as the first. Pingyao polished lacquerware is one of the four famous lacquerwares in my country (Beijing gold lacquerware; Fujian reborn; Yangzhou gong; Pingyao painted). Pingyao polished lacquerware has a simple and elegant appearance, shiny and bright, with magnificent decoration, delicate and smooth feel, heat and moisture resistance, and is durable. It is truly a fine product among lacquerware. Pingyao polished lacquerware is known for its cumbersome and complicated production process, which mainly includes the following steps: 1. Refining lacquer with special formula, skills and facilities; 2. Refining lacquer with lacquer and natural tung oil; 3. Covering the wooden base with hemp and hanging ash. Raw lacquer ash must be covered with cloth, pig blood ash must be covered with hemp, and loess glue needs to be covered with paper; 4. Making lacquer plugs (painting tools) with human hair and ox tails; 5. Drying the lacquerware in a special shade room; 6. Gold painting, including traditional techniques such as flat gold and black, drum-shaped lacquer, gold hook, gold covering and eggshell inlay; 7. Use sandpaper, charcoal, hair, brick ash, sesame oil, etc. to polish gradually to make the lacquerware as bright as a mirror; 8. Use inlay, engraving, gold covering, gray carving and other techniques for decoration. Pingyao polished lacquer ornaments are divided into two categories: practical items (such as lacquer cabinets, lacquer boxes, tables, coffee tables) and furnishings (such as screens, lacquer paintings). They have high practical value and craftsmanship value and are popular among the general public. The polished lacquer technique is also widely used in the decoration of palaces, temples, halls, and study rooms, achieving good artistic effects. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
