🎧  Listen to Introduction

Rongcheng is a major fishing city with a history of fishing production of thousands of years. In the long-term struggle with the sea, strong winds and waves, and in the heavy production practice, the hardworking and brave fishermen have continuously created fishermen's songs with local folk characteristics. As an indispensable ancient ballad and spiritual call in the production labor of fishermen, it is widely circulated in the coastal areas of Rongcheng. Fishermen's songs not only have the functions of inspiring emotions and regulating spirits, but also have the functions of commanding production, coordinating movements and unifying actions. With the different times, fishermen's songs have continued to develop and change, from the initial simple syllables and atonal forms to gradually evolved into fishermen's songs with tunes and lyrics and rich content. Especially in the 1950s and 1970s, fishermen's songs were most prosperous. Their musicality, rhythm and practicality were closely linked to production labor, forming the Rongcheng fishermen's songs with majestic momentum and alternating shouting and singing, and were passed down from generation to generation in the alternation of new and old fishermen. Rongcheng fishermen's songs are divided into three types. The first type: desperate songs (also known as life and death songs). They are used in storms, headwinds and currents at sea, or in emergency situations. The second category: free calls (also known as general calls). Used when pulling large boats, pedaling boats, and pulling nets. The third category: lyrical calls (also known as happy calls). It is mostly used when fishing boats return to the port. Its melody is beautiful, smooth and cheerful, with a distinct singing style and romantic color. The outstanding characteristics of Rongcheng fishermen's calls: first, the practicality of coordinating production and inspiring emotions; second, the richness of form and content; third, the flexibility of alternating shouting and singing and improvisation; fourth, the wide range of use in labor production. In the 1980s, high-powered fishing boats replaced simple wooden sailboats, and advanced mechanized operations replaced primitive manual fishing production. People working at sea no longer needed to use fishermen's calls to coordinate operations, and fishermen's calls gradually withdrew from the historical stage of fishery production. Today, most fishermen who can shout and sing fishermen's calls are elderly people around 70 years old, and young people can hardly shout and sing. Therefore, this ancient folk art is gradually dying out. Information source: Culture, Radio, Film and Television Press and Publication Bureau (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
