According to the Records of the Grand Historian, "the sage Zhuangzi once worked as an official in the lacquer garden". Mengcheng was called Meng in the Yin Dynasty, or Bei Meng. The oracle bone script said "Meng Hou", which means Meng State. In the Zhou Dynasty, it was Meng State, which had a lacquer garden. In the Han Dynasty, it was Shansang County, and later it was called Shansang, Meng County, Meng County, Wozhou, etc. It was renamed Mengcheng County in the first year of Tianbao in the Tang Dynasty (742 AD), and has been used ever since. Zhuangzi (about 369 BC to 286 BC) was a Han nationality. His name was Zhou, and his courtesy name was Zixiu (some say Zimu). Later generations called him "Nanhua Zhenren". He was a famous thinker, philosopher, and writer in Meng, Song State (now Mengcheng County, Anhui Province) during the Warring States Period. He was a representative of the Taoist school, the successor and developer of Laozi's philosophical thoughts, and the founder of the Zhuangzi school in the pre-Qin period. His doctrines covered all aspects of social life at that time, but the fundamental spirit still depended on Laozi's philosophy. Later generations called him and Laozi "Lao Zhuang", and their philosophy was "Lao Zhuang Philosophy". His thoughts contain elements of simple dialectics. His main idea is "the way of heaven is inaction". He believes that everything is changing. He believes that "Tao" is "born from the earth", and that "Tao has never been sealed" (that is, "Tao" is infinitely different), which belongs to the subjective idealism system. He advocates "inaction" and abandons all reckless actions. He also believes that everything is relative, so he denies knowledge, denies the essential differences of all things, and tries his best to deny reality. He fantasizes about a subjective spiritual realm of "the world and I are born together, and all things are one with me", and he is at peace with the times, free and happy, and leans towards relativism and fatalism. In politics, he advocates "ruling by inaction", opposes all social systems, and abandons all cultural knowledge. As the place where Zhuangzi lived all his life, Mengcheng naturally left many stories and legends of Zhuangzi. After countless retellings by people of all generations, it has been enriched and improved in the process of transmission, which has formed the legend of Zhuangzi today.
