Fur making technique
The bimaole fur is a fur product unique to Ningxia, with a history of hundreds of years. Its raw material is the local specialty Ningxia Tan sheep. Thousands of years ago, the sheep farming industry in Ningxia was already quite developed. During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, Tan sheep bimaole fur was already famous. The "Ningxia Prefecture Records" recorded "brown cloth, winter sheep fur", and the "Gansu New General Records" even praised it: "Fur, Ningxia is particularly good." Ningxia Tan sheep is a long-tailed, fat, coarse-haired fur sheep breed. In the world's sheep farming industry, no fur sheep similar to Tan sheep has been found so far. It can be said that Ningxia Tan sheep is unique in the world. Most Tan sheep are white, but they have brown, black, and yellow spots on the head, around the eyes and cheeks. There are very few pure black and pure white ones. Rams generally weigh 40 to 50 kilograms, and ewes weigh about 30 to 40 kilograms. Rams have large, curved spiral horns that stretch outwards, and are very strong and powerful. Ewes generally have no horns. The coat is heterogeneous, consisting of medullary and non-medullar hair. The hair is more than ten centimeters long, thin and soft, and of excellent quality. The production of two-hair leather requires multiple processes such as sheepskin classification, soaking, tanning, leather setting, and cutting. The cycle of hand-making a piece of two-hair leather clothing takes more than half a month. A piece of high-quality two-hair leather has very soft hair spikes, which are known as "nine bends". When lifted up, the hair spikes are drooping like water waves, and the luster is as white as snow. The overall skin is as thin as thick paper, with a tough, soft and even texture, and is known as "light fur".
