Xu's clay sculpture
Xu Xingguo, the main inheritor of "Xu's clay sculpture", learned sculpture, painting and calligraphy from his father Xu Deqin since he was a child. His father Xu Deqin was the last disciple of Yang Ziyuan (from Yangxi, Santai) and Luo Ticheng (from Caoxi Street, Pengcai Town), famous statue teachers in Sichuan in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. At that time, there was a reputation among the people that "Yang's sculpture and Luo's painting are the best in the world". "Xu's clay sculpture" uses traditional techniques for construction. The clay sculpture uses yellow mud and clay on site. First, the design is drawn (including line drawing, effect drawing and construction drawing), and then the frame is set up, the rough blank is built, and the fine mud is applied to the white blank to be completed and wait for it to dry. After repairing, the plaster is scraped and polished, and the vertical color pattern is made, and the color is gilded and the opening is completed. "Xu's clay sculpture" adopts traditional character modeling, clothing color painting, gilding, and heavy painting, revealing the ancient style and elegance. Its works are circulated in Sichuan, Chongqing, Hunan, Jiangxi, Hainan, Taiwan and other places, and are popular in tourist attractions and religious temples. From 1981 to 1990, Xu Deqin and his son Xu Xingguo were hired to restore the sculpture project of Fengdu Ghost City. It took eight years to design and sculpt more than 2,000 statues, making Fengdu a world-famous tourist attraction. In 1991, they designed a 5,000-meter-long large-scale Luohan Hall in Mianyang Luohan Temple to sculpt 1,250 huge Arhats, 1,250 statues of different figures of about 2 meters, and a 16-meter-high four-sided thousand-handed and thousand-eyed Guanyin statue in the middle, which is the largest in the country. In 2001, the Mianyang Luohan Temple Ten Thousand Buddha City was built, which contains 12,000 small Buddha statues. In addition, more than 40 Buddha and Bodhisattva statues over 9 meters were sculpted, which is larger than the "American Ten Thousand Buddha" city, rare in the world, and highly praised. The project was announced as the first batch of intangible cultural heritage of Daying County and the first batch of intangible cultural heritage of Suining City in August and September 2006. In March 2007, it was announced as the first batch of intangible cultural heritage list of Sichuan Province (Sichuan Government Letter [2007] No. 42). (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
