Jilin Paper Cutting

Jilin
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Jilin paper-cutting originated from the Manchus. Its selection is exquisite and simple, not limited by vision and time and space, and rich in Kanto characteristics. In the past, paper-cutting was mostly based on Manchu legends and stories, such as "Ginseng Doll", "Legend of the Dragon Locking Pole", "Crow Saves the Lord", "Hunting", as well as vegetables, fruits, labor, livestock, etc. It is simple and thick, strong and bold. Paper-cutting has a history of more than 1,500 years. The "Historical Records" records the story of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty "cutting the image and conferring the title of brother". There is a poem "sticking yellow flowers in front of the mirror" in "The Ballad of Mulan". "Cutting the image" and "Yellow flowers" are both forms of paper-cutting. In the vast rural areas of northern my country, women have been learning paper-cutting since they were six or seven years old. It is also the base pattern of embroidery and the foundation of various folk arts. Paper-cutting is mainly used to express festive blessings. Red paper announces good news, symbolizing good luck; colored paper welcomes spring, symbolizing the return of spring to the earth. The environment formed by these bright colored papers is warm and festive, making people excited. Coupled with its various auspicious and blessing implications, it makes people feel even more cheerful and happy. Jilin paper-cutting has both the traditional Manchu paper-cutting characteristics of northern my country and the cultural characteristics of immigrants in the Songhua River Basin; it inherits traditional techniques and strives to incorporate modern art elements. The works are known for their grandeur, refinement, exaggeration, and decorativeness, and are unique in style across the country. Under the care of the Jilin Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, Jilin City established the first municipal paper-cutting art center in Northeast China in November 2004. This is a major measure to implement the talent development strategy, brand building strategy and cultural heritage protection project. In the past few years, in accordance with the requirements of "experts leading, backbone training, popularization, and brand formation", with the joint efforts of relevant departments and Jilin paper-cutters, through training, creation, exchanges, exhibitions, theoretical seminars, friendship and other activities, Jilin paper-cutting has presented an unprecedented prosperity and achieved remarkable results. Over the past few years, Jilin City has organized paper-cutting artists to create a large number of paper-cutting works, including more than 3,000 kinds of "auspicious paper-cutting", "folk paper-cutting", "Jilin scenery paper-cutting", "new morality, new fashion paper-cutting", etc., with more than 20,000 pieces. Zhang Chunying alone has created nearly a thousand kinds of "Jilin folk history story paper-cutting", "auspicious doll paper-cutting", "scenery paper-cutting", and "twelve zodiac paper-cutting". Chen Guozhang's "folk paper-cutting" and "zodiac paper-cutting", Nie Mingming's "ice and snow paper-cutting" and "character paper-cutting" have been well received by experts inside and outside the province. In order to promote Jilin, display new achievements, and exchange creative experience, paper-cutting authors in Jilin City have participated in national paper-cutting competitions held in Beijing, Hangzhou, Hohhot, Shenyang, Hong Kong and other places in the past few years, and have won a total of 86 awards, including 1 special award, 2 golden scissors awards, and 18 gold awards. Zhang Chunying was awarded the title of "National Ten Golden Scissors" and won the highest national paper-cutting award "Golden Scissors Award" twice in a row. Zhang Chunying's gold medal work "Women in the Compound" and rising star Nie Mingming's gold medal work "Sanwa" were published in the overseas edition of the People's Daily in August and December 2007 respectively. A number of paper-cutting masterpieces have been collected by museums and art galleries in various places, and a large number of works have been included in paper-cutting collections published in various places. Jilin City's paper-cutting is very artistic, ornamental, practical and collectible. Since 2005, Jilin City has held paper-cutting art exhibitions for four consecutive years, and it has been included in Jilin City's "Three Festivals" activities. The exhibition received visitors from all over the country and guests from more than a dozen countries including Japan, the United States, Germany, and Singapore, and the works were widely collected by them. In August 2007, the "Jilin Province Paper-Cutting Art Exhibition" with Jilin City's paper-cutting works as the main body was held in Miyagi City, Japan. In June 2008, when the opera "Mulan Poems" starring famous Chinese singers Peng Liyuan and Dai Yuqiang went to the Vienna State Opera for performance, Jilin City's paper-cutting works were presented to Austrian guests as a national gift. Zhang Chunying and others were also invited to perform live in Hong Kong, Macau and Japan, and were warmly welcomed. With the support of all sectors of society and after years of unremitting efforts, Jilin City's paper-cutting art has been recognized by the society and has been reported many times by central, provincial and municipal news media. The idea of making Jilin paper-cutting another cultural brand of Jilin City has become a reality.
