Jingbian paper-cutting is rich in content and covers a wide range of themes, including landscapes, figures, flowers, insects, fish, birds and beasts, opera stories, myths and legends, etc. Each paper-cut has a certain meaning. The lines of the paper-cutting patterns are symmetrical and the patterns are varied. Generally, the zigzag pattern is the main one, supplemented by cloud mouth pattern and city wall edge, etc., which has a strong local flavor and ornamental value. If these paper-cuttings are created by themselves, they will first draw the pattern on red paper. Those who are skilled will draw the pattern in their minds and then cut it directly on the red paper; those who copy others will first peel off the window paper, paste it on a small piece of white paper with water, and then smoke the paper back and forth with kerosene lamp smoke, and then peel off the pattern, leaving a clear black and white pattern. Then cut the same size of red and green butter glossy paper, cover the pattern on it, and bind it with fine paper twists, carefully select and cut, and finally leave a lifelike image. In a sense, creating a paper-cut is a process of combining painting and "cutting" paper. A good paper-cutter is a good painter and craftsman. Conception and action can reflect his talent in art. And inspiration. Whether it can be refreshing is the key to measure the quality of a paper-cut. The finished paper-cuts are not used until a few days before the New Year. Every household has swept the house and pasted the windows. They are selectively pasted in red and green, symmetrically, which is very beautiful. These window paper-cuts are like the smiling faces of farmers, and also like blessings for the good luck and good fortune of the coming year. Window paper-cuts have formed a kind of landscape and culture in Jingbian folk customs. Many women in Jingbian have been cutting paper since they were teenagers until they are fifty or sixty years old, when their eyes are blurred and their hands are shaking and they have no patience, or they let their daughters-in-law and grandsons replace them. During this period, they naturally experience the roles of girls, girls, daughters-in-law, mothers, grandmothers, etc. Small paper-cuts have accompanied the lives of Jingbian women. Whenever the paper-cutting girls see their own or other people's windows decorated with colorful paper-cuts, they are so happy! Paper-cuts not only decorate the windows of every household in Jingbian, but also decorate the spring of every household's heart. The works, aspirations and ideals of these girls were first published on the windows of Jingbian people. The coming and going of relatives from faraway places, the novel creations of clever girls, and the mutual exchanges and secret competition between girls and daughters-in-law have promoted the continuous development of Jingbian paper-cutting. In addition, it has a long history and has been passed down from generation to generation, thus forming a certain scale, certain advantages and certain style. Famous poets He Qifang, Li Ji, Ai Qing, writer Ding Ling, painters Gu Yuan, Jiang Feng and others have come to Sanbian for interviews and collected a large number of folk paper-cutting works. In 1978, the Jingbian County Cultural Center organized professionals to collect more than 2,000 paper-cutting works in the county, and sent more than 400 to the Shaanxi Provincial People's Art Museum, all of which were collected. More than 20 paper-cut works were selected by national, provincial and local newspapers and magazines. After that, the foreign trade department organized the export to Hong Kong and other places. On December 13, 1985, the cultural centers of Jingbian and Dingbian counties jointly held the "Sanbian Paper-cut Works Exhibition" at the Xi'an Artists Gallery. The more than 800 works exhibited were exquisite and interesting, and were well received by people from all walks of life. Famous people such as painters Gu Yuan, Jin Zhilin, Fang Eqin happily wrote inscriptions and gave high praise to Sanbian paper-cut. In 1986, Jingbian paper-cut was once again praised in the "Yulin Area Suide Shishi and Sanbian Paper-cut Exhibition" held in Beijing.
